“She’s asked about Tanner Jeans and the park, and we’ve talked about that and bike safety,” said mom Stephanie Algrim. “She really takes that to heart, thinks about that.”
Saturday’s 10th annual Bike Safety Rodeo, created in memory of Tanner, a 7 year old boy who died in a bike-car accident in 2003, is a way for local families to learn about bicycle safety and overhaul their gear. Mom Rachel Krohn, whose daughter Adele, 4, learned about the necessity of stopping at intersections (Photo below), learned that a hand-me-down helmet had a hard-to-see fracture. She got to trade it in for a free, new one.
“I like how she’s learning about safety,” said Stephanie Algrim. “How to look at the signs, when to stop. Thinking about wearing her helmet. Getting her bike inspected properly.”
“The kids really enjoy doing it,” said dad Vincent Sawaya, watching his four-year-old son ride. “It’s fun to see the kids learning. It’s a good way to spend the morning with family.”
