Car review: 2021 Chevrolet Blazer

When it comes to certain car models they seem to come, and go, and come again.

That’s certainly the case with the 2021 Chevrolet Blazer, a mid-size crossover SUV that seats five adults. The model has been back in production since 2019, and is sure to evoke fond memories for former owners.

My tester, the near top-of-the-line RS AWD, is powered by a 3.5-liter DOHC, V6 engine mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. The engine generates 308 horsepower at 6,600 rpm, 270 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 rpm, and has a max towing rating of 4,500 pounds.

The Blazer RS is the only model to offer twin-clutch AWD. Blazer also comes in L, 1LT, 2LT, 3LT and Premier trim levels. My tester delivered 26 miles per gallon fuel economy down the highway, 19 mpg in city driving, and a combined total of 21 miles per gallon.

Exterior appointments include a silver ice metallic coat of enamel, 20-inch, dark android machine-faced aluminum wheels, power heated side mirrors, and a hands-free power lift gate.

Inside, the Blazer RS delivers heated front and rear sideboard seats, heated steering wheel, dual-zone air conditioned climate control, active noise cancellation and a 120-volt power outlet. The rear seats fold flat, providing a cargo area large enough to transport six full-size, Les Schwab tire bag rolls.

Also standard was navigation with eight-inch touchscreen and voice recognition, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth audio streaming, remote vehicle start, rear seat reminder, and available Sirius XM, OnStar service and Wi-Fi hotspot.

My tester came equipped with an “Enhanced Convenience Package” ($1,660), “Driver Confidence II Package” ($1,650) and a “Storage Optimization Package” ($175).

The convenience package adds Bose premium audio with eight speakers, ventilate driver and front passenger seats, power tilt and telescopic steering column, and heated rear outboard seats. The confidence package adds rear view mirror camera, wireless cell phone charging, adaptive cruise control, LED headlamps HD surround vision, and enhanced automatic emergency braking.

Storage adds a cargo area organizer that keeps items from slip-sliding around the back, and a front console organizer to keep high priority items easy to find.

The Blazer RS cabin is quiet, keeping road noise to a minimum. The Blazer had more than enough power to pass slower vehicles quickly and efficiently, and handling was surprisingly stable for an SUV.

Completing the Chevy Blazer is a strong standard safety and security package that is competitive with the competition.

Safety features include forward collision alert, following distance indicator, Intellibeam-auto high beam, teen driver, lane change and side blind alerts, rear park assist, lane keep assist with departure warning, and front pedestrian braking.

The Blazer comes with a three-year/36,000 mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty and is assembled in Mexico.
