Out of the past: Grisly scene of fatal bludgeoning at Ames Lake; Eight fly to view North Bend outlet mall’s future

The following items made the news 25 and 50 years ago in the Snoqualmie Valley, as reported in the Valley Record:
Thursday, Feb. 20, 1964
• A 61-year-old widow, Mrs. Agnes M. Norman, was found bludgeoned to death in her trailer on the Ames Lake Cutoff Road Tuesday morning. Her nearly nude body was discovered by her sister, Mrs. Kenneth Sikes, of Carnation, lying against a blood-spattered bathtub. Sheriff’s investigators found a large rock on the floor and red-stained footprints on the living room carpet. Sikes last saw her sister alive Monday when she visited her home.
• As a result of the recent election, King County Fire District 35 has annexed more area to its territory.
Thursday, Feb. 16, 1989
• “Great Northwest Factory Stores” is the name of a different kind of retail center scheduled to open in North Bend a year from now. To afford the city a close look at what is planned, the Willey Creek Development Co. flew eight people to Vacaville, Calif., to check out a year-old outlet mall there. Among those Taking the all-day trip were Mayor Fritz Ribary, councilmen Arlen Reno and Chris Roethle, planning commissioner Joan Simpson, public works chief Steve Gilbert, and Valley Record reporter Paul Weideman.
• “The Landmark Celebration and “T” Party, as it’s being billed, celebrates the 100th birthday of both North Bend and the state of Washington, and the 50th birthday and grand reopening of Si View Park. A raft of parties are planned Saturday.
