Hats off to Dad

With W-2’s and 1099’s arriving in your mailbox, remember you can
pick up IRS forms at the North Bend Library. And if we don’t have the
form you need in stock, they are also available on the Internet. We can’t get
away from paying the taxes, but maybe this will help make it a bit less of a hassle.

Talented local instructor Julie Imsland will be showing how to make
great Valentines and gifts from some unexpected materials. Call the library

I spent last weekend in Port Orchard helping my sisters host an
open house for my dad’s 80th birthday. We had a pretty good turn out and I
think a good time was had by all. Mom was able to be there, as well as two of
the great-grandbabies. My nieces are very good about taking the time to
make sure Great-Grandpa sees the babies. And they send him lots of pictures too.
If he didn’t live in Las Vegas, Dan would have had Tim there as
well. They are all pretty good kids.
I would like to take a moment to brag about my daddy. He has been
a terrific Dad. He is very active in American Legion Post #30 and
has been for over 50 years.
He owned a business in Port Orchard for many years, taking over
from his dad and his brother-in-law. He raised five daughters to be honest,
productive people. Three of us have college degrees; and my sister
Jeanne, always an over-achiever, has a Ph.D. in educational administration.
We aren’t perfect by any means, but we vote, we take care of our families
and we are involved in our communities. We support charities, give blood,
and try to make the world a bit better than we find it. I think Mom and Dad
can take pride in that accomplishment.
Daddy was not able to go to college, due to family circumstances.
But he is smart man. He is the reason I got through physics in college, and
he knows all sorts of interesting facts. My sister once remarked that she
always knew Mom was a whiz at trivia, but she didn’t realize how much
Daddy knew as well. He could be a millionaire easily, if Regis Philbin would
just give him a call!
Daddy is also a wise man. At least I think so. He always seemed to
know the right thing to say when I was in a dilemma. He has supported my
decisions, tried to help me see the consequences of my actions, and let
me make mistakes when I needed to. And whether he said it out loud or not,
I always knew he loved his family. It was there in the hard work he did
to support us. It was there in the family vacations we took. It was there in
the rough hands that felt so good rubbing your back when you were sick. And
it was there in the fact that, come hell or high water, he and my mother will
celebrate 60 years of marriage in this new century.
So here’s a toast to my daddy, from Daddy’s Little Girl. You’re the
greatest!
