Wildcat girls’ golf makes history

The Mount Si girls’ golf team closed out their season with a historic victory over Sammamish recently. The Wildcats won the match 226-297 over the Totems.

The 226 score is the lowest ever posted by the Wildcat girl golfers in school history. Leading the way was sophomore Katie Somers. The standout fired a 1-over-par 37 to pace Mount Si. Also helping in the effort was Becky Wada with a 42, Jen Sanford with a 45 and Katie Stapleton with a 49. Alyssa Bliven rounded it out with a 53.

Mount Si had the rest of last week off and this week the postseason begins with the Kingco tournament.


JV team posts mixed results

On a sunny Wednesday, the ‘Cats JV softball team returned to shut out Newport 11-0. Rachel Nyberg continued with her hot bat with a double and a triple, clearing the bases both times for six RBIs. Kelsey Walker added some punch to the offense by lacing out two singles and April Saffell blasted a triple. The Wildcat defense and solid pitching held the Knights to only one hit, and Lindsay Bertram and Hanna Mortensen made outstanding catches in the outfield.

The girls finished up their season with a game against Mercer Island on Friday.


MSHS JV suffers big loss to Eagles

The Mount Si JV softball team was outmatched by visiting Issaquah as the Eagles pounded out 14 hits in a 0-14 lopsided win. The girls played a decent game but had no answers for such a “hot” team. Rachel Nyberg managed to get two hits and Cortney Tubbs and Hanna Mortensen added singles.

On May 26 the ‘Cats JV softball team traveled to Liberty and a late bus forewarned what would become a miserable day. The girls did score a run in the top of the first, however, five base hits by the Patriots wrapped around five errors and six base-on balls led to the lopsided defeat. The final score was Mount Si 1, Liberty 11 in six innings.

The league record stands at 6-1; the season record at 7-4.


‘Cats blowout Islanders

The Mount Si JV softball team ender their season with a lopsided win over visiting Mercer Island by a score of 18-1. All nine players scored runs as the ‘Cats took advantage of 14 walks. Six different players blasted out 10 base hits including triples by Kelsey Walker and April Saffell. Krystal Stewart scored four times. Rachel Nyberg ended her JV pitching career by tossing a no-hitter.

JV softball ended up with a Kingco league record of 8-2, and a season record of 9-1.


Track team notches victory

Last week under a blazing May sun, the Mount Si boys’ track team picked up its first victory of the season by edging cross-Valley rival Cedarcrest 42-40. The boys also lost to Liberty 101-42 in the three-way meet. Drake da Ponte bounced back from an injury to run a 10:32 3,200-meter race to qualify for the league meet. Joe Taklo ran his first 800 meter of the year in 2:04 to also qualify for league. Kyle Stanton-Wyman lowered his 300-meter hurdle time by more than a second to 46.4 for a second-place finish. Josh Davis triumphed in the discus yet again, defeating last year’s league champion in the process. Davis and Jake Tweten both achieved personal bests in the shot to take third and fourth-place respectively with throws of 42 feet, 9 inches and 41 feet, 4 inches.

Thomas Goble ran a personal best time of 4:45 in the 1,600 meter for a second place. Sean Bothell competed in the 400 meter for the first time all year, finishing in 54.2 seconds for third place. Dan Floyd leaped a season best 38 feet, 4 inches in the triple jump for third place. Tom Perry threw a personal best in the javelin for the third consecutive week to go 138 feet. Quinn Hopkins threw personal bests in the shot, discus and javelin. Next week the postseason begins for the track team as they compete at the league meet, the next step to making it to state.


Great efforts at Shelton

Several members of the Mount Si girls’ track team traveled to Shelton recently to compete against some of the best athletes in the state. Many of those competing earned recognition for their efforts. Tove Garhard placed ninth in the pole vault clearing 9 feet. Madison Yakaboski placed sixth in the 100 meter and eighth in the long jump. Katie Woolsey placed ninth in the 200 meter and Jessica Oliver also placed ninth in the 300-meter hurdles.

The 4×100 relay team of Yakaboski, Oliver, Nicole Remish and Diane Keller broke the school record for the third consecutive week by running a 50.4 seconds in the preliminary race. Keller placed tenth in the high jump, clearing 4 feet, 8 inches. Remish ran a seasons best time of 60.7 seconds to place fourth in the 400 meter. In the last race of the meet, Remish, Yakaboski, Woolsey and Oliver shattered the school record in the 4×400 relay with a 4:04.6, the fastest time in the state this year for a 3A high school.


Girls close out regular season with win

The Mount Si girls’ track team closed out their regular season last week by defeating both Liberty and Cedarcrest in a three-way home meet. Many of the girls improved their seeding times and distances for the league meet next week.

Madison Yakaboski tied the school record by running a 12.6 second 100-meter dash. She also won the triple jump with a personal best leap of 34 feet, 8 1/2 inches. Yakaboski also placed second in the long jump with a distance of 16 feet 3 1/2 inches. Symone Shaw won the long jump with a distance of 17 feet.

Jessie Oliver ran a great time of 47.4 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles to place second and Nicole Remish ran 1:01.2 in the 400 meter to finish second. She also ran a 26.8 second 200 meter to place third.

Yakaboski, Shaw, Oliver and Remish shattered the 4×100 relay record for the fourth consecutive week by running a 49.9 second time. Diane Keller placed first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.4 seconds. Teammate Ashley Wright led the throwers by tossing the discus 103 feet and throwing the shot 30 feet, 9 inches, both personal bests. Tove Garhart won the pole vault at 9 feet and Mariah Stevens ran a great time of 2:42 in the 800 meter to place in that event.

JV pulls out win against Islanders

The Mount Si JV baseball team came away with a 9-8 win recently against Mercer Island. Zack Robinson started things off in the first inning with a triple, scoring Derek Aldrich from second base. Dan Reeves then hit a sacrifice fly to center with Robinson scoring. Mercer Island took a 3-2 lead after three inning but the ‘Cats came back in their half of the fourth inning. Reeves was hit by a pitch, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Mikel Ushler singled then stole second base. Trevor Gardunia brought Reeves home with a sacrifice fly to center field and Evan Aaltonen knocked a base hit to center to score Ushler.

The Islanders then went ahead in the fifth inning with two runs and a run in the sixth, making the score 6-4. Mount Si came right back in their half of the sixth with five runs. Sean Bettine pulled out a walk to start things off. Aaron Fisher then pinch ran for Bettine. Gardunia singled with Fisher going to second base. Aaltonen drew a four pitch walk to load the bases. With two outs, Ian Brown walked, forcing Fisher in from third base. Aldrich ripped a triple to the fence in right center field and Gardunia, Aaltonen and Brown all scored. Robinson followed Aldrich with a run-scoring single to put the ‘Cats up 9-6.

The Islanders added two runs in the seventh to make it close but Mount Si came away with the victory.


‘Cats fall to Newport

The Mount Si JV baseball team lost a double header to Newport last week, 14-7 and 10-6. In the first game, Ian Brown scored two runs on two walks. Zack Robinson had three hits and Justin Poth scored two runs on two walks. Kyle Cantalini and Kris Jensen had hits for the JV team.

In the second game, the ‘Cats scored all six runs in the second inning. With one out, Trevor Gardunia walked. Cantalini hit a single and Eric Ward walked to load the bases. Jensen then singled to left center and both Gardunia and Cantalini scored. Brown then wal
