The Mount Si boys’ soccer team traveled to Newport last Tuesday night for their last game of the regular season and fell 4-1. The Knights won and clinched a playoff berth, putting the postseason hopes of the Wildcats in the hands of the Issaquah Eagles.

With last Thursday’s Mount Si forfeit to Mercer Island, the Liberty Patriots had a chance to grab the No. 4 spot away from the Wildcats with a win over Issaquah. The Eagles, though, had other ideas. Issaquah beat Liberty 2-0 and that gave Mount Si the No. 4 Kingco playoff berth. Although Interlake, after beating Bellevue, finished with a 5-8-1 record in the conference, the same as the Wildcats, Mount Si still took the spot thanks to a 1-0-1 head to head record against the Saints.

Kevin Isackson scored the lone Wildcat goal in the 65th minute off an assist from Marshall Lloyd. But by then it was already too late as Newport had scored three goals prior to the Mount Si tally. Mike Mayer, Vince Delaurenti, and Adi Grcic tallied those goals for the Knights.

Newport added one more goal from Andrew Smith late in the game to seal things up. Andrew Poplawski assisted on two goals and Grcic assisted on another.

With all the adversity this team has had to work through, getting to the playoffs is quite an accomplishment. “We are all very excited and fortunate that Mount Si has made the playoffs,” wrote coach Darren Brown in an e-mail to the Valley Record. He added that the future looks even better. “We are young and improving, but in two to three years, this soccer team will be where I want it, just the way it is with the girls. We are on the right track,” he wrote.

The Wildcats were scheduled to play the Knights yet again in a loser-out game last Tuesday at Newport. If they win that game, they will play Thursday either at Sammamish or Mercer Island for a state berth.
