The week in sports

A look at sports from Mount Si and Cedarcrest.

Cats pull out close finish

Brandon Bumpus and Nick Harpel combined their pitching roles to

beat Interlake 6-5, extending the JV Wildcat baseball record to 5-2.

Harpel helped his effort by leading off the fourth inning with a solo home

run, and Garrett Parsons hit in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh

inning

JV baseball wins another

Nick Harpel pitched five strong scoreless innings to extend

the Wildcat’s winning streak to five games in a row. The Wildcats took

advantage of a few Issaquah errors to score two runs, and the defense played solid

giving up only one run to beat Issaquah 2-1. The Wildcats are now 6-2

in league play.

`Cats suffer first loss

Despite Bruce Opsal going 2-for-3 with a double and a triple, and

Nick Harpel having three singles, the Wildcats were unable to hold on to a

two- run lead to suffer their first loss of the season to Skyline, 6-5.

The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead, but the Spartans came

back to within one run. Key hitting in the top of the sixth gave the Wildcat a

two- run lead, but allowed the Spartans to tie it up at five runs in the bottom

of the seventh. The Wildcats were unable to produce any runs in the top of

the eighth, and the Spartans offense exploded to score the winning run in

the bottom of the eighth to take the win 6-5.

Silent bats hurt `Cats

The JV Wildcat baseball suffered its second loss in a row to

Sammamish last week, 11-2.

The offense was silent, while the Totems exploded for 11 runs to

walk away with the victory. The Wildcats committed five errors, suffered

five strikeouts, and left 11 men stranded on base. Jason Donah and

Scott Johnson provided the only spark offensively with two hits each.

Knights hammer `Cats

The JV Wildcat baseball suffered its third loss in a row against

Newport on Monday to bring their record to 6-4. The Wildcats couldn’t produce

offensively combining for only six hits including two singles by

Adam Vandebrake. Mount Si committed eight errors to allow Newport to

extend a four run lead into the bottom of the sixth that allowed them to

10-run the Wildcats with a score of 11-1.

JV suffers another loss

The Wildcat JV baseball team suffered another loss against

Newport bringing their record to 6-5. The Knights dominated the game, but

the Wildcats kept it close by being only three runs behind going into the

bottom of the sixth inning. But then the Knights exploded for 10 hits

scoring 10 runs to beat the Wildcats 13-1. Adam Vandebrake provided the

offensive spark for the Wildcats going 2-for-3 in the game.

Errors down `Cats

Problems continued to plague the Wildcat JV baseball team last

Wednesday against Liberty. Eight errors and only four hits contributed to a

14-4 loss to the Patriots. The Wildcats were only able to score their runs in

one inning, leaving seven men stranded. The Wildcats’ record stands at 6-6.

`Cats end streak

The Wildcat JV baseball turned things around last Thursday

against Mercer Island. Seven strong innings by Dan Flood and clutch hitting

by Scott Johnson, Nick Harpel, Brandon Bumpus, Steve Botulinski, and

Adam Vandebrake allowed the Wildcats to break a 2-2 tie in the bottom of

the fifth and go ahead 5-2.

Flood had six strike outs and allowed only two runs to get the

Wildcats back on a winning track beating Mercer Island 7-5.

`Cats down Bellevue

Seth Holub, with four goals in the game, helped lead his Mount Si

varsity soccer team to a blasting of Bellevue 8-1. Holub started the

scoring early in the game on an unassisted shot at the goal 6:26 into the first

period. Teammate Roger Patterson followed suit when passed the ball

by Cory Vilsmeyer for the goal at the 11:06 mark. The scoring frenzy

continued with another shot by Holub at the 18:37 mark of the first period,

giving Mount Si a 3-0 lead to end the half.

The second half went much the same way with Holub, Tony

Baldwin, and Ben Kaplan all notching goals. Bellevue, on the other hand, would

not score until nearly the end of the game for their one lone point.

Baldwin and Holub had six shots on goal; Kaplan, three; Patterson

and Jeff Stone, two each. The game also saw cautions for Mount Si’s

Kaplan, who was later ejected; Drew Arenth, who was also ejected; and

Brett Bergstrom.

Roosevelt defeated

The “C” soccer team of Mount Si sent the Roosevelt Rough Riders

home with a loss last week 3-0 in a game with throngs of fans. Mount Si

dominated the entire game with steady teamwork. Leo Bachand, assisted

by Brandon Dollinter, scored the first goal then turned right around

and scored goal number two. Dollinter finished the scoring for the `Cats.

Leading the defense was Jonathon Neilson who prevented

several Roosevelt goals, getting the credit for a shut-out.

`Cats pull out win in extra innings

The Mount Si “C” baseball team waited until the 12th inning to get

the win against Mercer Island last week, 4-3. The Islanders jumped to an

early lead in the first couple of innings, 2-0. But the Wildcats came back,

scoring three of their own in the fourth, to take a one-run lead. Mercer Island

tied the game in the top of the sixth, forcing the game into overtime.

Finally, in the twelfth, Heath Jones was walked then stole second base. A game

winning shot by Steve Mauter into right center scored Jones for the win.

Excellent pitching by Nick Kirschner, Jonas Bekins and

Jones kept the game close.

Softball hands Issy a loss

The Mount Si JV softball team handed Issaquah their first league

loss last week, defeating them 11-6. Freshman Anika Safstrom, freshman

Rachel McNaul and freshman Mary Lee all had triples. Sophomore

Christy Roeber, freshman Kristen Travis and freshman Tabitha Albertson each

had two hits. The winning pitcher was Megan Alexandra.

Tennis team trounces Issaquah

Playing in the hot sun must have inspired the Wildcat tennis team

because their hot play dominated their matches with Issaquah. Playing in

the number one spot was Christina Boals, who after a tough battle came up a

bit short as her set ended.

In the number two spot was Ariah Nobe who didn’t give her

opponent any chance, winning in two sets. Teammate Amber Bliven also

defeated her Issaquah opponent as did Jessii Raisio. Also recording singles

wins were Emily Pizzuto and Erin Vassar.

In doubles play, the teams of Nobe-Bliven and Coffee-Olson

recorded wins.

`Cats thump Sammamish

The Mount Si JV Softball team recorded 16 hits in their 15-1 romp

of the Totems. Sophomore’s Holly Turner and Hillary Calhoun went

2-for-2. Freshman Jessica Rasmussen went 4-for-4. Notching the win

as pitcher was Ashley Beck.

JV `Cats tie

Mount Si’ JV soccer team hosted the Sammamish Totems last week

but couldn’t muster enough offense to break the 1-1 tie. Evan Lamon

scored the first goal of the game but the Totems were able to come back with

the tying goal.

Tennis team takes win

The Wildcat’s JV tennis team downed Issaquah last week, 6-3.

The “C” soccer team challenged the East Lake Wolves in an

exciting match last week but fell short in the 3-6 loss. The Wolves came out

strong and scored three goals but the `Cats answered as Brandon Dollinter

scored two for Mount Si. Teammate Tyler Austin then added a third to tie

the game. But East Lake wasn’t through, adding three more for the win.
