Red Wolves in control of their own destiny
Cedarcrest moved back into the KingCo playoff picture with an
exciting 11-6 win over Valley-rival Mount Si last week. The victory snapped
a seven-game losing streak for the Red Wolves and put them in control of
their own playoff destiny.
The Wolves had a 4-11 record last week following a heartbreaking
defeat to last-place Mercer Island. The Wolves stood tied for sixth place
with the Sammamish Totems in the 10-team conference. Only the top six
schools qualify for post-season play.
Cedarcrest and Mount Si played a spirited, high-scoring game last
Friday that saw the teams tied up at five runs a piece after each team scored
in each of the first three innings. But the Red Wolves’ bullpen came through
to shut down the Wildcat offense while Cedarcrest exploded for six runs in
the top of the final inning to lock up the win.
Senior catcher Matt Cain got the Wolves rolling with a solo home
run in the first inning and outfielder Cody Wheeler followed that blast with
a two-run shot of his own in the second. Wheeler and Sean McDonald
both ended up going 2-for-4, including some pivotal RBIs in the
Cedarcrest seventh.
McDonald was the losing pitcher on Tuesday as the Cedarcrest lost
its 11th game of the league schedule, 10-7, to Mercer Island in a game
played at Tolt Field in Carnation. McDonald contributed on the offensive side
by going 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI, but was the victim when the
Islanders scored three runs in the sixth to take the lead.
Senior R.J. Wickstrom went two-for-three for the Wolves, while
Scott Schaible contributed two hits — including a sixth-inning home run —
in four at bats against Mercer Island.
Cedarcrest wrapped up its 2000 regular season campaign with an
important game against Sammamish at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue
on Wednesday. The Wolves were scheduled to take on first place Skyline
last Friday at Tolt and then travel to Bellevue on Monday to confront
the suddenly surging Wolverines.
If necessary, the KingCo tiebreaker games will be played
Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The league tournament is scheduled for May
9, 11, and 13.
JV girls beat Wolves
The Mount Si J.V. softball team took on their cross-Valley rivals
last week and dominated the game 14-4 in five innings. Rachel McNaul hit
two doubles and a single. Teammate Kristen Travis also had a double
and tacked on two singles. Mary Lee and Anika Engebretsen also had hits.
The winning pitcher was Ashley Beck.
`Cats pull out squeaker
Nick Martindale scored the first goal of the evening as the Mount
Si J.V. Wildcats defeated the Skyline Spartans, 4-3. The Spartans
answered with a goal of their own to tie the game. It was all tied up 3-3 when
Joey Neilson came through at the end to find net and win the game.
Varsity soccer rises to challenge
The Wildcats varsity soccer team hosted Skyline last week,
eventually sending them home on the bus with a 3-2 loss. Seth Holub began the
scoring for the `Cats and later scored goal number two on a direct kick.
Skyline came back and tied the game, but with the score at two
each, Holub scored again on a corner kick from Jed McDaniels. The goal
gave Holub a hat trick and a team victory.
`C’ team pounds Cedarcrest
The Wildcats baseball team pounded the Red Wolves last week
for an impressive 16-4 win. Jonas Bekins pitched three innings and held
the Wolves to one run. Mount Si capitalized scoring 16 runs on 18 hits,
ending the game in the bottom of the fifth.
Nick Kirschner went 2-for-5 with an RBI and three runs.
Teammate Heath Jones went 1-for-4 and scored three runs. Tyler Bergstrom went
2-for-3 with one RBI and three runs. Steve Mauter went 3-for-5 with
three RBIs and two runs.
Nick Johnson went 2-for-2, with six RBIs on two sacrifice flies, and
he scored two runs. Kyle Doty went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Scott Buschen went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run. Finally, Bekins went
2-for-2 and scored one run.
`Cats pull out win over Patriots
The Mount Si women’s track team defeated Liberty last week 76-73
despite cold and wet conditions. Heather Breitenbach won the 100 meters in
a personal best time of 13.3 seconds. She also placed first in the high
jump going 4-10. In the 300-meter hurdles Breitenbach set a personal record
of 50.9 for second place.
Ashley Wiegardt had a win in the 200 in a personal best time of 28.6
and placed second in the triple jump with a 31-6 score. Teammate Sheena
Kern won the 3200 in a time of 12:49.16 and Cari Smith won the pole vault
with a height of 8 feet.
Ashley Van Oeveran won the discuss with a toss of 88-3 and the
team of Mellisa Warren, Jessica Hanna, Breitenbach and Wiegardt won the
4 x 400 relay to complete the list of first place finishes.
Several other individuals set personal records despite the
weather. Emily Verbon ran her best 100-meter hurdle with a time of 17.3 and
Katie Childs had personal bests in the 1600 and 3200.
Track men defeat Liberty
Mount Si continued its impressive outings in the track world with
the Mount Si men defeating the Liberty Patriots, 87-54. The `Cats won 12
of 17 events to take the win. Nick Verbon won the 110-meter hurdles in a
time of 15.5 seconds and the 300 hurdles in a time of 43.1.
Jacob Waggoner took first in the 1600 with a time of 4:57.81
while teammate Payton Thompson won the 800 in a time of 2:09.2. Mike
Macrae won the 3200 in a time of 11:25.2 and the team of Todd Barry,
Kai Miyamoto, Bobby Taylor and M.J. Crandall won the 4 x 400 relay in
a time of 3:50.7.
Dan Haakinson won the discus with a toss of 133-10 and
David Bothell won the javelin with a throw of 128 feet. Jacob Limestal won
the pole vault with a height of 9 feet while teammate Erik Lannigan won
the triple jump at 39 feet and high jump at 6-4.
`Cats defeat Bellevue
In a season of ups and downs, the Wildcat diamond men are working
on adding more wins to their season record. Last week’s challengers
were the always-tough Bellevue Wolverines, and they went down in defeat,
5-4.
Bellevue started it off getting a lead off walk off of Mike Dahm.
The next Wolverine batter laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner
to second. The next Wolverine batter grounded out to Sattler at short
who threw to first for the out, but the runner advanced to third. The run
finally scored for Bellevue on a single.
Mount Si would tie the game in the fourth as Matt Murphy — after
an initial walk, single by Joey Adams and ground out by David LaBelle
— would score.
In the fifth, Bellevue would turn up the heat. The leadoff batter
for Bellevue tagged a base hit, then stole second. The next batter was
walked by Dahm and was put out on a fielder’s choice hit at second base. With
runners on first and third, Bellevue launched a sacrifice fly to left field
but Jason Donah had trouble finding the ball for an error and ultimately
scoring a run. Coach Gary McGregor had Mike Dahm walk the next batter
to intentionally fill the bases with one out. Aaron Svarthumle then fielded
a grounder to third and threw home for the force, but LaBelle forgot to
touch the plate, scoring another Bellevue run. The `Cats would finally
squeak out of the inning with only two runs scored as the next batter grounded
to Svarthumle again, who then threw to LaBelle for one out and then
rotated and threw to Poth at first for the 5-2-3 double play. But the Wildcats
were down 3-1.
Mount Si would inflict some heavy damage in the sixth inning,
though. With one out, Murphy singled to center. Teammate Adams then singled
to right center, advancing Murphy to third. Adams scrambled to second
as the Wolverines attempted to make a play on Murphy at third.
LaBelle then launched a nice sacrifice fly to center to send
Murphy home. Tyler Osborn got into the act with a single to left, which
advanced Adam
