Girls do well in KingCo tournament
Freshmen Tanya Smart led the Mount Si girls at last week’s
KingCo league track meet winning the discus with a season’s best throw of 113
feet 8 inches. With the win, Mount Si placed ninth in the team scoring
with 37.5 points. Also doing well for the team were Heather Breitenbach
who placed fifth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.05.6, fifth in the
200-meter dash with a time of 26.92 seconds, eighth in the 300 hurdles with
a time of 50.86 and fifth in the high jump with a height of 5-1.
Teammate Ashley Wiegardt placed sixth in the long jump with a
personal record of 15-1 on Wednesday then came back to take third in the
triple jump with a distance of 33-8.
Other placers for the Wildcats were Emily Verbon, with an eighth
in the 100 hurdles; and Ashley Van Oeveren, with an eighth in the shot
put with a throw of 31-4.
Cari Smith tied for sixth in the pole vault at 8-6. Both Wildcats missed
a trip to districts by one place.
Maggie Flaig helped the team effort by scoring eighth in the discus.
`Cats drop squeaker to Newport
After taking an early lead on a Seth Holub goal, the Newport
Knights came back and dominated a flat Wildcat team winning 2-1.
Halfway through the first period, Newport’s Joe Johnson found net and blasted the
tying goal. From that point on, it was obvious that Mount Si was
mentally out of the game. Senior Tyler Bowen scored Newport goal number two
with 33 minutes left on the clock in the second period. Newport’s defense
held tough against any Seth Holub onslaught. Holub, the league’s
leading scorer, only had a few chances at the net. Containing Holub was the key
and the Knights did it well, assigning a player just to him the entire game.
The loss forced Mount Si into survival mode, taking on Mercer
Island Saturday at home in a loser-out game. Playing in bright sun on real grass
had the potential of creating a great launching pad to state. But the Wildcats
could never quite muster the offense necessary to get that opportunity and
their defense failed to stop an onslaught of four Islander goals.
The loss finished the season for Mount Si. The Islanders, on the
other hand, will head to the state tournament.
Mount Si sports two champions
Erik Lanigan and Nick Verbon led the list of Mount Si trackmen as
both qualified first to the state tournament. After clearing 6 feet 2 inches in
the high jump, Lanigan had to run a 200-meter dash. When he got back to
the bar it was at 6-6. He cleared it on his second attempted and went on to
clear 6-8 for the win.
Nick Verbon came from behind to take the League Championship in
the 110 high hurdles in a great time of 15.11 seconds.
Other district qualifiers include Dan Haakenson who took third in
the discus with a throw of 141-11. Ben Eaton took second in the long
jump with a distance of 21-3.5 and fourth in the triple jump with a distance
of 40-10.5. The relay team of Eaton, Kai Miyamoto, Dan Barry and
Eddie Horstman placed fifth, with the team as a whole placing fifth as well, at
64 team points.
Other placers for the meet were Lanigan, sixth in the 200 in a time
of 23:52.7; Eaton, seventh in the 200 with a time of 2:24.03. M.J.
Crandall recorded a seventh-place finish in the 800 with a time of 2:07.19 while
teammate Nick Verbon took fourth in the 300 hurdles with a time of
42:15.5. Dan Barry took eighth in the 400 meter run with a time of 56.78. In
the javelin, Jesse Bauman took seventh with a throw of 155-2 and
Erik Lanigan took eighth in the shot put with a throw of 43-10.
The Sea-King District Championships are Thursday and Saturday
at Lake Washington High School.
