The week in sports

A look at local High School athletics.

Cedarcrest “C” squad loses to Newport

Cedarcrest High School’s “C” team had a touchdown called back

and was unable to establish its offensive game during its recent 30-0 loss

to Newport.

The players’ performance during the game reflected how they had

practiced during the previous weeks — sometimes sharp, often chaotic.

In the first quarter, Cedarcrest returned the kickoff to near the 30

yard-line, but needed to punt the ball after three plays. The defense took

over, gave up some yardage on the first few plays, but then got the ball back on

a fumble recovery. Both teams exhibited jitters in the first quarter, which

ended 0-0.

The second quarter began with a great defensive stand on the part of

the Red Wolves. Newport started with the ball on the 50 and drove down to

the 2. After four attempts at scoring, they were forced to hand the ball over

to the Wolves.

On a beautifully executed trap/counter play, Jesse Pettersen

broke through the line and went the distance of the field untouched.

Unfortunately, his 70-plus-yard rush was called

back because of a penalty for not enough players on the line of scrimmage.

The momentum generated by the defensive stand dissipated and Cedarcrest had

to punt again.

Newport took the ball over on the Cedarcrest 34 and drove to near

the end zone. On fourth down, the Knights finally punched through the goal

line on a pass. The two-point conversion gave them an 8-0 lead.

After halftime, it looked like a different Cedarcrest team took the

field. The defense started the third quarter and played tough. It gave up a

first down but eventually got the ball back on another fumble recovery.

The Red Wolves started to march down the field. It was second and

long when Pettersen again broke a long run. He went through the left side of

the line and was brought down hard 20 yards later on the Newport

20-yard line.

But Pettersen did not get up, and the trainers rushed to the field. His

face mask had been pushed into his face by the ground, and his lip was

bleeding, which forced him out of the game. Four plays later, the series stalled

on the 15-yard line with an incomplete pass on fourth down.

The departure of Pettersen took the wind out of the Red Wolves

sails. Newport continued to rack up points and sent the Wolves home with a

30-point loss.

net for the fifth goal on a cross from Angie Boyd, and Robin Trombley

claimed the sixth score. Audrey Christenson scored the `Cats final goal with an

assist from Ellison. Angela Lynch is credited with the shutout of the

Red Wolves.

`Cat golfers thump Knights

Friday nights are usually associated with football games, but this

past Friday the Mount Si Wildcat Golf team tackled the Newport Knights

and drove them into the ground by 14 strokes with a winning score of

187-200.

Newport was considered to be a possible contender to knock off

the mighty Cats, but even with the strength of medallist Charles

Koh shooting 36, no other Newport player shot in the 30s. The Wildcats

proved their tenacity with the top five finishers all closing with scores of 38

or below. Juniors Sean Armstrong, Eric Larson and Derek Lee all shot

37, while the Fallows brothers teamed up with both Sean and Brett shooting 38s.

JV soccer shows strength in final preseason game
