Red Wolves whomp Saints, down Spartans
On a steamy, buggy night Tuesday, Sept. 21, at Howard Miller Field
in Carnation, the Cedarcrest girls soccer team took early control of their
match with Interlake and breezed to a 6-0 victory. What kind of night was it?
Red Wolf goal keeper Jenny Harder rarely touched the ball, as her
teammates regularly kept it in play at the Spartans’ end of the field.
Junior Lindsay Peterson scored the first Cedarcrest goal at 2:50.
The Wolves’ tough, mobile defense then proceeded to swarm all over the
overmatched Interlake squad. Goals two through six followed at 28:54,
when senior Sarah Young put one in the net with an assist from Dana Elwell;
at 59:00, by Elwell, who followed up with a successful penalty kick; by
senior Heather Sherfy at 62:00; and finally, a second shot by Peterson
at 78:00.
The victory put the Wolves at 2-1 in league and ready for a face off
with Skyline the following Thursday night. That match – at the Spartan’s
home field – turned out to be a tad closer.
Cedarcrest scored the winning goal – the only one of the 1-0 victory
– at the 15-minute mark, when Sherfy took a pass from Peterson and
rocketed the ball past Spartan goalie Sarah Alverez. The Wolves and
Spartans then settled into an evening of back and forth, with the visitors
ultimately prevailing. Erica Burch and Harder split time in the net for Cedarcrest.
With a 3-1 KingCo 3A record and second place in the Valley
Division, the Wolves hosted Sammamish Tuesday night, Sept. 28. They travel
to Issaquah this Thursday evening.
Wildcats fall to Totems, Pats
The Mount Si Wildcats had a rough week of it, dropping games
to both Sammamish and Liberty.
On Tuesday night, Sept. 21, the `Cats fell to the Totems by a score
of 3-0. The visitors gave away the first point at the 24:30 mark when they
put the ball in their own goal off an errant head shot; that’s all the
Sammamish squad needed for the night, but they added two more scores at 62:00
and 77:30 for good measure. Amber Schneider did the entire 80 minutes
in the goal for Mount Si.
In JV play, Mount Si dumped the Totems by a score of 3-0, with
goals by Nikola Skinner, Kelsie Owen and Nicole Howard off assists by
Howard, Carrie Frantz and Elise Ellison, respectively. In the C-level game,
the `Cats thoroughly dominated Sammamish by a score of 9-1.
Rachael Alexander and Jessie Lentgis each punched in two goals, while
Rebecca Hartwell, Katy Young, Nicole Velota, Angie Boyd and Megan Wright
scored single points. The defense played strong and helped keep the Totems
off goal keepers Lisa Turner and Stephanie Riley.
The Wildcat varsity returned to the field of combat last Thursday
night, fighting the good fight but ultimately loosing to visiting Liberty by a
score of 6-2. The Patriots’ Chelsea Beck knocked in two unassisted goals at
the 2:30 and 5-minute marks before Heather Breitenbach answered with
a Wildcat score, at 15:00.
The Pats then pumped in three more, with Lindsay Ratcliff
scoring Mount Si’s second goal at 60:00. Liberty’s final goal came six
minutes later off a pass from Sabrina Oldham to Stephanie Ernst.
The JV game had similar results, with the Patriots coming out on top
3-0. The C-Cats played a tough one with the Redmond Mustangs, giving up
one goal in the final ten minutes. Allison Moorehead then brought the ball
the length of the field before passing off to Hartwell for Mount Si’s only
score. The game ended in a 1-1 tie.
The Wildcats journeyed to Newport on Tuesday night, Sept. 28,
to face the Sky Division-leading Knights, and follow with a Thursday
evening home meet with Mercer Island. The JV contest commences at 5:30
p.m., with the varsity taking the field at 7:30.
