In a little over a week, the Mount Si High School boys soccer team will get the game they’ve been preparing for all season. On May 9, the Wildcats play Skyline High School, at Skyline, in the KingCo conference championships.

It’s going to be a rematch with the team that gave Mount Si its one and only conference loss in what has been an amazing season for the young team.

“Our record is five wins, one loss and two ties,” said head coach Darren Brown. With the team’s 1-0 win Thursday over Eastlake, they secured the number-two seed in the playoffs and a spot in the May 9 game against Skyline.

“That was our one loss,” said Brown, detailing how Mount Si led Skyline by one goal until the last 20 minutes of the game. “So this one has been circled on my calendar…. We’ve been gearing up for this game for a long time.”

In the days ahead, Brown predicts a higher level of intensity to the team’s practices. “This is the championship, so we’ve got to be well prepared,” he said, with practices, game film reviews, and run-throughs of offensive and defensive scenarios.

Also, he says, “we expect to win every game. That’s just the mindset we have.”

The players have been working hard toward that goal, and a repeat of the KingCo championship they claimed last season, in their first year at the 4A level. They’ve also been very steady.

“The key to a long season is keeping things in perspective. We don’t want to get too high… we celebrate a win the next day, then flush it down the toilet,” Brown said. “The motto is always one game at a time. They work hard day in and day out, and it’s really been that way since tryouts in February.”
