Middle school sports

A look at sports from the Valley's Middle Schools.

Eighth-grade boys battle but fall short

The eighth-grade Eagle varsity basketball team battled and

scraped against Maywood at home last week but came out short in the tight

contest, 63-58.

Eric Meuli kept the Eagles in the game early scoring eight of his

ten points in the first quarter. Josiah Cormier led the Eagles with 18

points and Michael Gavronski finished with 10 rebounds.

Maywood’s hot player, Andrew Haskings, was impossible to

stop down the stretch as he drained several three’s to pull away for the win.

Jarrod Wiegardt played his normal tenacious defense and also

finished with nine points.

Eagles shutout Keithley

The Lady Eagles’ soccer team logged another shutout in the

books, defeating Keithley, 4-0. From the start the action was intense with the

Lady Eagles gathering momentum early and taking several quick shots at the

goal. After less than two and a half minutes into the game, a wing chip by

Kelly Fletcher centered the ball to Kristen Berndt to allow a header in the net

for the first Eagle score.

Continuing to dominate the game, the dynamic midfield efforts of

Fletcher, Ariel Waddell and Kayla Jayne allowed the forwards to

knock in several more Eagle goals. Both Fletcher and Waddell scored their

first Eagle goals of the season, tagging power shots from midfield.

Whitney Chelgren consistently connected the ball to the goal net.

The Eagle defense saw little action on their side of the field because of the

relentless efforts of the power midfield. Each defender came forward to

pass the ball back towards the Eagle goal to set up the offensive team for

another advance toward the goal.

Eagles victorious over Tolt

Clinging to the comfortable confines of the Eagles’ Nest the

seventh-grade boys varsity basketball team clawed its way to a victory over

cross-town rival Tolt Middle School. The winning formula was simple: D + E

+ R = W. Defense plus Execution plus Rebounding equals Wins.

On this day the Eagles found all of the necessary ingredients to

secure the victory. Zach `the Shaq’ Bowen pounded the boards for 11

rebounds and torched the net for a game high 15 points. The silent assassin

Aaron Chadwell quietly collected a game- high 13 rebounds to go along with

his six points. The Doctor, Zach Elmore, cut and stitched his way to 10

points, three assists and three steals. Derek `Glove’ Donah executed the

Eagle game plan to perfection as he registered eight assists, four steals,

four points, and most importantly 0 turnovers.

Strong defensive efforts were turned in by Adam Rothgeb who

had eight points through three quarters of action. Strong post play by

Andrew Pass and Branden Sales kept the Tolt big men off balance and limited

any second-chance opportunities for the Tolt squad. A basket by Kyle

Dalman put the finishing touches on a well-balanced Eagle victory as SMS

won 37 to 22.

Eagles wallop Keithley

The SMS Eagles JV soccer team hosted Keithley last week and

despite muddy field conditions, walked off the field with an impressive 5-0 win.

Heather Riexinger led the scoring efforts with two goals followed

by teammate Jennifer Riley who also scored. Rebecca Coffey notched

an assist. Tana Heath, Ariel Swatez, Veronica Gee, Tennyson

Salopek, Jesse Conway, Bethany Jackson and Danielle Raver kept the pressure

on, allowing Jackson a goal as well as a second late in the game for Riley.

Defenders Meghan McKague, Brittney Foster, Alex

Willing, Chantelle Tapia, Carol Oates and Ellie Larson shut out Keithley’s team

with the aid of Melisse Hennig as goalie.

JV Eagles claw Ford

In a show of total team effort, the SMS girls JV soccer team traveled

to Tacoma last week to take on Ford. They rode the bus home with a

2-0 win in the record books.

Heather Riexinger scored the first goal of the day with help from

teammates Jennifer Riley, Ariel Swatez and Rebecca Coffey. Tana Heath,

Veronica Gee, Jesse Conway, Tennyson Salopek, Danielle Raver and

Bethany Jackson took turns bringing the ball down the field to set up the score

by Jennifer Riley. Meghan McKague, Ellie Larson, Carol Oates, Alex

Willing and Brittney Foster successfully guarded goal Melisse Hennig,

never allowing a ball past them.

Hawk boys pound Tolt

The Chief Kanim boys eighth- grade basketball team hosted Tolt

last week, sending the team from Carnation home with a loss, 72-38.

The Hawks took a 19-6 lead at the end of the first quarter and

never looked back. The Lower Valley team made a valiant effort to add points

to the board but at the end of the half was still down.

Chief Kanim came out swinging in the third quarter and blitzed a

dazed Tolt for 26 points. Tolt never recovered and the Hawks notched

another win.

A super hot Kris Bostic, led all scorers with 27 points. Bostic was

11-12 from the floor and 5-5 from the charity stripe. “Big Fella”

Jeremy Johnston, added 18 points, 16 rebounds and six blocked shots.

Every player scored in this one. Hank Kennedy had six points;

Jimmy Fleming, Corey Roe, Matty Secord and Brad Trombley had four each;

Jay Lewis tagged on three; and Nick Sheldon, two. Brad Trombley

added five assists and four steals and Corey Roe played awesome defense on

Tolt’s best player and shut him down in the second half.

Hawks notch another win

The Chief Kanim eighth-grade boys basketball team traveled to

Pine Lake last week to give their host team a loss, 72-52.

It was an extremely tight first half with both teams taking the lead

back and forth. The Hawks had a nice run just before half and led 34-27. In

the third quarter, CKMS took control of the game scoring 23 points to

Pine Lake’s 13 and led, 57-40.

Kris Bostic and Hank Kennedy played big roles down the stretch

scoring 24 points together in the second half.

CKMS played ball control in the fourth quarter and wound up with

a very satisfying 72-52 victory. Bostic and Jeremy Johnston led all

scorers with 20 points each. Kennedy added 16, Corey Roe and Mike Lindor

added seven each and Brad Trombley had two. Johnston led the team with

10 boards followed by Kennedy with eight, Bostic seven and Lindor

six. Kennedy also added five assists, three steals and four blocked shots.

CKMS only had nine turnovers and played great team defense.

“This may just be our best all-around game so far. Everyone contributed and

gave effort during the entire game,” Coach Fowler commented.

Hawks out-point Thunderbirds

The Chief Kanim seventh-grade boys varsity basketball team hosted

a game Thursday afternoon where they defeated a scrappy Tolt team,

47-28. The Hawks used an efficient offense and an intense defense to finish off

the Tolt team.

Coach Blake was extremely proud of his Hawks’ offense. “They did

a good job running the plays!”

Outstanding efforts were demonstrated by Eric Tierney with 21

points and seven steals. Josh Griffith had 17 points and six rebounds. Brad

Barry had two points and one assist. Jimmy Hunrie had two points and two

assists. Shawn Smith had three points while teammate John Holt had one assist

and one steal. Steven Grace had two points and one steal. Blaine Sutton had

two points and one steal. Logan McMackin had two rebounds

and Scotty Barnum had one blocked shot.

SMS boys chalk up another victory

Pressure defense and offensive balance were paramount in the

SMS seventh-grade boys’ victory last Thursday over the Maywood

Chargers.

Ball movement around the perimeter stretched the floor and

allowed Eagle guards to penetrate the interior of the Maywood defense. Derek

`the Glove’ Donah dished out numerous assists to Zach Bowen in the post,

and shooters Jake Laskody and Adam Rothgeb who were spotted up

waiting for the ball. Aaron Chadwell continued his tenacious offensive

rebounding and retrieved six offensive boards that translated into his

game high 13 points. The lightning quick Zach Elmore
