SMS wallops Mercer Island

By scores of 12-15, 15-8 and 15-11, the Lady Eagles

8th grade volleyball squad defeated Mercer

Island Monday, Oct. 18, in a match described as a “total team effort…everyone

contributed.”

Amy Keogh led the way in the first two games as captain, while

Jen Newman came off the bench to provide a defensive spark. Shaleia

Rich played tall at the net and Kristen Berndt, Kelly Fletcher and

Robin Trombley used their athleticism to spike the ball over the net.

Jaclyn Boals packed a wallop with her serve and eventually hit the game

winner, as the Lady Eagles ran their record to 6-1.

Lady Hawks upend Tolt

Wednesday night, Oct. 20, the Chief Kanim

8th grade varsity volleyball team took three from Tolt,

although the final match was a nail-biter. The Lady Hawks ultimately

prevailed by scores of 15-5, 15-6 and 15-13.

Natalie Sinclair, Kellie Adams, Erin Hart, Rosary Mangano

and Kristina Turple all were strong in serving to lead the Hawks to victory,

while Hart, Sinclair and Lindsey Logic were awesome on the attack.

Stacy Courtwright, Alyse Douglas, Morgan Durman, Christie Leatiota,

Angela Lynch and Ryanne Rothenberg all helped contribute to the awesome

win, gaining accolades from Coach Kjorsvik.

Chief Kanim netters pummel Maywood, Tolt

The Lady Hawks walked away with a victory Monday, Oct. 18,

in their match with Maywood Middle School. The final scores were

13-15, 15-9 and 15-8.

Brittany Heaps took control of her powerful serve, giving CKMS

seven points in the final game. Michelle Avery and Lindsey Austin

demonstrated calm, controlled serving, also adding seven points each to the team.

Outstanding defensive players were Alisha Galaencu and Lindsey Beach.

Due to their clear communication, their focused attention and their

skilled playing, it was no surprise they came away with the win.

Wednesday night the 7th grade varsity swept Tolt by scores of 15-1,

15-11 and 15-3. The Lady Hawks were completely in charge of their

game, demonstrating excellent skills both offensively and defensively.

Dulcie McHugh continued to lead the team in serving by adding

twelve points over the three games, while Austin consistently added points

with her solid serving. A strong defensive team led by Heaps in return hits

supported the servers. Emilie Aaltonen provided a show by saving

several balls and bringing them back into play. Lauren Sinclair had some fine

plays at the net lopping the ball over to the surprised Tolt team.

Lady Eagles thump Mercer Island

Monday, Oct. 18, the SMS 7th grade varsity volleyball team

improved their record to 6-1 by downing Mercer Island 15-1, 15-2 and

15-10. The Lady Eagles’ Sam Baldwin was the top offensive scorer of

the game.

Two nights later blood, sweat and tears weren’t enough and _ after

three hard-fought games _ the Lady Eagle

7th graders lost to undefeated Pine Lake (and their low ceiling) by

scores of 10-15, 15-9 and 10-15.

However, coach Hope Nichols singled out Baldwin,

Whitney Chelgren, Kayla Jayne, Mallory Horsch, Whitney Beyerlin,

Rashell Kamienski and Keera Kanuha for praise, adding, “hold your heads

high! You played well, be proud, and we’ll get them next year!”

Chief Kanim dumps Woodbrook

The Chief Kanim Hawks 7th grade football team played a

tremendous game Tuesday, Oct. 19, defeating Woodbrook 20-7. The Hawks’

offense picked apart the opposition with an excellent passing and running

attack while the defense shut down everything.

CKMS started the fireworks when Blaine Sutton threw a 50-yard

touchdown pass to Erik Tierney. Sutton kicked the extra point to make it

8-0. After a Woodbrook score made it 8-7, the Hawks scored on a halfback

pass from Turner Pelfrey to Tierney to make it 14-7. Pelfrey then finished

off Woodbrook with a 15-yard TD run. Chris Nevin and Logan McMackin

led the defensive charge to ensure the victory.

Outstanding Hawk offensive players were Sutton, five for eight

passing for 90 yards and one touchdown; Pelfrey, 22 carries for 55 yards,

one touchdown running and one touchdown receiving; and Tierney,

three catches for 60 yards and two touchdowns. The outstanding

defensive players were Nevin, 14 tackles and one sack; McMackin, nine tackles

and three sacks; Pelfrey, eight tackles; and Connor, seven tackles.

Coaches Blake and Boyer were extremely proud of their team’s effort.

SMS beats Mercer Island, drops game to Pine Lake

However, despite playing some of their best volleyball of the year,

the 8th grade Lady Eagles fell to Pine

Lake Wednesday, Oct. 20, by scores of 4-15 and 2-15. A consistent serving

attack by Pine Lake made the difference in the game, along with the

“home court advantage;” more often than

not, the Eagles’ serving was shut down by gym ceiling rather than the

opposing players.

Robin Trombley played energized volleyball as setter, while Shaleia

Rich roamed the net like an Eagle, teaming with Kristen Berndt and Jaclyn

Boals for intimidating blocks.

The Lady Eagles finish out their season this week with two games,

including a rematch with arch-rival Chief Kanim.

Hawks drop one to Woodbrook

The Chief Kanim 8th grade football team got off to a fast start

when they hosted Woodbrook on Wednesday, Oct. 20. The Hawks initiated

the festivities by recovering a fumble and quickly moving down the field. A

24 yard pass from Hank Kennedy to Kris Bostic got the Hawks close, and

then Mike Lindor pounded it in for a touchdown. Lindor kicked the extra

point to put CKMS up 8-0. Woodbrook scored just before half on a

kickoff return, putting the game at 8-7 in favor of Chief Kanim.

In the second half, Woodbrook scored following a Chief Kanim

turnover, making the score Woodbrook 13, CKMS 8. The fourth quarter was

a wild one, with Chief Kanim driving as the clock wound down. On a

fourth and five play from the 15 yard line, the Hawks missed the first down

by inches. The clock ran out as the game slipped out of their reach.

Defensively, the Hawks played tough. Phil Collins and Brad

Trombley each had a fumble recovery; Trombley also added an interception with an

18 yard return. Lindor again led the team in tackles with 11, while

Trombley recorded seven and Brian Gross had six.

The team appreciates the support of its fans, and invites everyone

to Wednesday’s game against Mann, at home.
