Norm (known to many as Smokey) grew up in Cle Elum and Laurel grew up in Roslyn. They met at school and became high school sweethearts. They were married in Roslyn, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on July 28, 1956.

In 1957, they moved to Snoqualmie, where Norm started working for Weyerhaeuser. They raised four children in the Snoqualmie Valley, Larry, Terry, Tim and Kary, all of whom graduated from Mount Si High School and live nearby.

The couple has 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, with another one expected.

They enjoy getting firewood, camping and traveling the country.
