A Washington State Trooper shot a driver near the I-90/State Route 18 Interchange on Friday, June 16. An investigation is now underway.

According to a press release, Ellensburg Police were notified of an erratic driver heading westbound on I-90 near Ellensburg just before 10 p.m. Friday. They alerted other law enforcement agencies, saying they had probable cause to arrest the driver.

Two state troopers later located the driver on I-90 near North Bend and followed them to Milepost 25 in an effort to stop the vehicle.

Near the State Route 18 interchange, the driver allegedly attempted to ram one of the trooper’s patrol vehicles, police said, prompting one of the troopers to fire a single shot at the driver.

The driver was given life-saving aid and transported to Harborview Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, police said. No other injuries were reported. The incident prompted officers to close westbound I-90 for several hours.

The shooting is now under investigation by the Independent Force Investigation Team – King County, a collective of King County law enforcement agencies. Members of the Washington State Patrol will be excluded from the investigation.
