The organizers of Grad Night for Mount Si High School are trying to come up with $1,200 to pay for transportation costs for the all-night party. Organizers have had trouble raising money because only one-third of the graduating class has signed up this year, compared to three years ago, when most students participated.

The economic recession has probably caused some of the declining interest in Grad Night, which costs $150, said Mary Nelson, the event’s co-organizer.

The organizers have awarded several scholarships to students who could not afford the fee.

Grad Night is an all-night celebration at multiple venues in the Greater Seattle area. It offers graduating seniors an alternative to more traditional — and more dangerous — parties with drugs and alcohol.

Seniors are whisked away immediately following graduation to undisclosed destinations, and don’t return until early the following morning.

Nelson would not say where this year’s events are planned, but gave some information about what is planned.

The first venue is a building with multiple activity rooms, including a “velcro wall” and an hour-long hypnotist show. The second venue will have arcade games, pool tables and Segway races.

“There will be stuff for everybody to do,” she said.

The organizers are seeking donations in goods or money for the event. They need items for gifts and prizes for participating seniors, food and money.
