To protect children, the public and the environment from fireworks injuries and damage, fire departments want residents to keep three things in mind: Be prepared; Be safe; and Be responsible.

Be Prepared

Before lighting any fireworks, know your area’s fireworks laws. North Bend, Snoqualmie, Fall City (under King County code) and Duvall allow the discharge of fireworks from 9 a.m. to midnight on July 4, but Snoqualmie allows only ground-based effects such as sparklers and smoke bombs. All consumer fireworks are illegal in Carnation.

Sky lanterns are also banned throughout the Eastside Fire and Rescue service area, because they feature an open flame and have an unpredictable flight path.

Purchase only legal fireworks, available at licensed stands. Clear a level area for setting off the fireworks, well away from things that can burn.

Ensure the safety of pets, many of which are disturbed by the loud sounds and may try to run away.

Place all used fireworks in a bucket of water. Use a garden hose or fire extinguisher to put out stray sparks.

Teach your children to “stop, drop, and roll” if their clothes catch on fire.

Be Safe

Light fireworks only outdoors on a level, hard surface. Only adults should light fireworks, and they should wear safety goggles.

Light one firework at a time and move away quickly. Do not lean over effects when lighting them and never relight an effect.

Keep spectators at least 20 feet away from fireworks.

Be considerate of your neighbors, family pets, and your environment.

Obey the time restrictions for discharge — in most Valley cities it’s 9 p.m. to midnight.

Be Responsible

When the fireworks are done, be sure to clean up all debris.

If an effect does not go off, wait 15 minutes, then place it in a bucket of water.

Soak fireworks for 10 minutes before throwing them away.
