With a new name and the same mission, I-90 Church will soon be moving from its remote Issaquah spot to the heart of historic Snoqualmie.
I-90 Church, with the help of investors, has purchased a building on Railroad Avenue and will be holding services on the second floor. Services at the new location will start sometime in December, depending on when inspections are completed, according to lead pastor Trey Skinner.
Though the church’s offerings will not be changing, it will have a new name to salute its new home: Downtown Church.
I-90 Church, started more than 10 years ago, has been in a space right off of Interstate 90 smack between Issaquah and Preston in unincorporated King County. While the church is very grateful for its time there, Skinner said he is ready to be more accessible to the community.
“It was very off the beaten path, and it was really between two communities,” he said. “This pivot is just to say, OK, we want to choose one place and then we want to serve that place.”
Skinner said the new location will also be beneficial to the current members of the church, most of whom reside in the Snoqualmie Valley, allowing them to more easily socialize.
“Our church … has always been a really community-centric church, a strong group of people who like to spend time together and do life together,” he said.
Moving into historic downtown Snoqualmie does come with stipulations. There is very little the church can do to the outside of the building, and the church will always have to be upstairs, as only retail space is allowed on the first floor.
But this piece of real estate was ideal for Skinner, especially in a region where large buildings are hard to come by.
“It takes some imagination to think of a church being up here,” he said. “If you’ve ever seen it, there’s this big atrium space and it’s like, full of light. And I thought to myself, that’d be a great place for a church.”
Ultimately, Skinner said, he wants to find the best way to spread the church’s message to a broader audience, and this move will help.
“We think [Jesus] loves people, and so we think it’s an opportunity to go out with this message in a public way,” he said, “and to reach a community in a way that we couldn’t where we were before.”
