SnoValley Pride’s new children’s picture book spreads a message of acceptance, kindness and love for others and the land.
“Uni’s Quest for Kindness” was written, designed and self-published by SnoValley Pride founder Gregory Jamiel. The story follows a unicorn named Uni who goes on an adventure through the Snoqualmie Valley. Along the way, Uni meets various animal friends who join the adventure, ending at Snoqualmie Falls.
The book fits into the nonprofit’s current campaign, “Kindness is Our Campfire,” which is “about creating warmth, connection and safe spaces for everyone in our community,” according to snovalleypride.org.
“We’re trying to change the culture of the Snoqualmie Valley to make our community very accessible and welcoming,” Jamiel said. “That in line with a bunch of people trying to ban children’s books, I was like, we’re going to make one and make a hyper-local one.”
Throughout the book’s 25 colorful pages, readers learn facts about each animal and the lands that they live on. The book also shows how the animals — a bear, a salmon, an elk, a bald eagle and more — can be kind to each other even though they are different.
“I wanted to take that kind of branding and imaging of why a lot of us love living here and put that into the book,” he said. “So the book really does highlight different features of our area, like Snoqualmie Falls, and sharing the powerful energy that is in that specific area and how that’s healing. And so we just wanted to tie that into a message of being kind to not only each other, but kind to the land as well.”
Branding and storytelling are specialities for Jamiel, who owns Voice of the Bear Consulting, an award-winning boutique marketing and design firm. SnoValley Pride, founded in 2023, is a young organization, and the book will help share the organization’s mission, Jamiel said.
“The idea was to have a marketing tool that people could read and connect with and kind of get a better understanding and idea of who we are as SnoValley Pride and what we stand for,” he said.
The book is sold on a sliding scale to make it as accessible as possible, Jamiel said — purchasers can pay $25, $30 or $35. After covering the expenses of self-publishing, all proceeds go to SnoValley Pride.
Jamiel said the book is currently sold out, but he is in the process of ordering more and hopes to have them available for purchase at the Timber! Outdoor Music Festival at the end of July.
At Timber!, SnoValley Pride will host a unicorn meet-and-greet, as well as one of its Kindness Campfires.
“[Kindness is Our Campfire] is all about being good to each other, good to the land, protecting each other,” he said, “and keeping that cold away.”
