• Walt Kohlruss of North Bend died last week after flames from paper he was burning in his yard apparently spread to some dry grass nearby. North Bend fire chief Jerry Venera said he is not precisely sure what happened, but the department’s best guess is that Kohlruss tripped and fell near the fire and was overcome by smoke and flames. He was conscious when firefighters arrived and told them he had fallen and couldn’t get up.

• Mrs. Bressler’s kindergarten class at Opstad Elementary was recognized for helping a new student with special needs. Earning the Otter Action award are Chad Auckland, Adam Baruch, Marco Cornejo, Jenny Emsley, Jenna Forgey, Audra Gilmore, Hanine Karim, Jessica King, Carly Kujath, Jayson Lottermoser, Chris Lyle, Karly Middleton, Valerie Pagel, Christina Petz, Joshua Riley, Megan Roe, Sundaylee Russon, Michael Schwag, Andrew Shedd, Jessica Tart and Nathan Winkler.

• Travis Mallett, an eighth-grader at Snoqualmie Middle School, recently spent a week in Olympia as a page in the House of Representatives. He was sponsored by Rep Louise Miller, Republican floor leader, Woodinville.

• The Mount Si Wildcats left the scene of the State A Tourney in Tacoma with sixth-place trophy in hand and the gym at UPS may still be ringing with echoes of cheering, appreciative basketball fans who watched the “little” team from the Valley come within an eyelash of taking third.

• Manager Fred Hayes has confirmed that there is substance to the widespread rumor that Weyerhaeuser Co. is considering hiring women in the mill at its Snoqualmie Falls operation. He told the Mount Si Business and Professional Women at their meeting, “We first heard about it when ladies began applying at the employment office for the first time since World War II.” This started the ball rolling, he said and the company is now definitely considering hiring women.
