The following stories happened this week, 25 and 50 years ago, as reported in the Snoqualmie Valley Record. From the Record’s archives:

Thursday, July 28, 1966:

Mr. and Mrs. Gurth Davenport of Snoqualmie were notified Monday that their son, Donald (Bud) G. Davenport, was killed in action in Vietnam on July 23. The Marine was hit by sniper fire while in a helicopter. Davenport, a Gunnery Sergeant, had only three and one-half years to serve before he would have been eligible for retirement and he met death on the day he was scheduled to leave Vietnam to return to the States. He had served in that war-torn country for a year.

The 1966 winners in each of the five divisions of the “Young Composer’s Project” will be featured in a concert Saturday, July 30 at the state assembly of the Washington State Music Teachers Association, at Western Washington State College. Four pupils of Mrs. Fred Harman will play on this program, Susan Daubert, Janet Geelhart, Steven Fury and Cassandra Ross. Two other pupils received honorable mention, Hugh Grew and Harry Stevens.

Thursday, July 25, 1991:

Bob Iness, a 10-year veteran with the King County Police, has been chosen to fill the post of Community Police Officer in the city of North Bend. The new position is the fruit of planning efforts by Emergency Services Director Jerry Venera and the city council’s committee on public safety, headed by Jake Gere.

The city of Snoqualmie is opposing efforts to reclassify portions of the Snoqualmie River from A to AA. The city fears that reclassifying the river would force Snoqualmie and North Bend to shut down their sewer systems. Class A rivers are considered “excellent” while AA are “extraordinary.” At issue is the stretch of river between Twin Falls State Park and the Carnation Farms bridge.

Brett Smith, a North Bend resident, has opened a new realty business dealing exclusively with land sales in the Snoqualmie Valley. Smith Co. Realtors offers sales in estate building sites and development, including riverfront and mountain-view properties.
