Fall City Day fun: Annual festival treated crowd to parade, car show, rubber ducks and plenty of community

Fall City Day is a rain-or-shine event and this year, a little of each fell on the festival. The rain showers were short, though, and most people seemed not to notice as they partook of corn dogs, elephant ears, crafts and, of course watermelon.

The day started with an old-fashioned pancake feed at the Fall City Masonic Lodge, followed by the fun runs at 9 a.m. In the race results, the top three placers in the 5K run were Randy Hollinger of Redmond, Paul Talens of Redmond, and Daniel Murphy of Duvall. The 5K women’s division champs were Kelly Laleman of Seattle, Naja Rtiyirez, and Chloe Cosgrove of Fall City. In the 10K race, the top men’s runners were Gabriel Kliot of Redmond, Timothy Corrie III of Redmond, and Ryan Wood. In the women’s division, the top placers were Sandra Selby of Mercer Island, Rhea George of Seattle, and Hillary Shaw of Kirkland.

At 11 a.m., the kid and pet parade started, followed by the grand parade, with grand marshals Bob and Patty Hogan.

Throughout the day, people made their way to Fall City Elementary School to admire the 28 cars on display at the Mount Si Lions Club car show. The rain kept a few cars away, but organizers were very happy with the turnout for a first-time show.

Car owners were busy with squeegee and chamois to keep their cars gleaming and chatting with visitors about the stories that every one of their cars had.

Art was on display and in the making over at the Fall City Art Park where carver Craig Breitbach had set up tools to let younger artists try out stone carving, and artist Joe Lee Davidson shared his chalks as he created a mural of Fall City.

The Rangers took the stage at Olive Taylor Quigley Park to delight young and old with their mix of country and classics. Cheers from the neighboring watermelon-eating contest may have drowned out the band for a short time as competitors raced for medals.

Near the end of the day, the ducks were dropped in the annual Ducky Derby. The weather was with the ducks, all of which headed down the river in the correct direction. Sammy Thaxton won the $500 grand prize.
