Out of the Past: Thieves break into six businesses, steal from three; Kimballs to compete in winter national drag races

• Sewers in Carnation are “on hold for at least a year, possibly more,” according to Michael Alvine, a senior development specialist for King County. Alvine commented after meeting with Department of Ecology representatives to discuss the draft facilities plan for the proposed sewer project. He said the department has two areas of concern, possible groundwater contamination and possible environmental harm to the Snoqualmie River.
• Between closing time on Feb. 6 and opening the next morning, six North Bend businesses were burglarized. Losses at El Caporal Mexican Restaurant, the Rose Garden and Last Cut East totaled over $850 in cash. Although six buildings were broken into and searched, nothing was missing from The Pizza Place, ERA Sno-Valley Realty or Highland Lo Builders.

• In a bulletin to all school superintendents, State Superintendent Louis Bruno announced that because of unexpected increased enrollments, it would be necessary to make a cut of $5.50 per pupil in the state allocation for every school district in the state. The total reduction would be about $5 million. Bruno explained that there were 6,588 more students enrolled as of last Oct. 1 than had been predicted.
• Tom Kimball and his wife Shirley of North Bend left Tuesday for Pomona, Calif., to participate in the sixth annual National Hot Rod Association “winternational” drag race championships. Kimball, who resides on Cedar Falls Road, will be piloting his ’59 Fiat Bianchina, nicknamed “Underbug,” which is powered by an all-aluminum Porsche engine.
