Mount Si falls to Issaquah

The Mount Si girls golf team fell to Issaquah last week 258-225. Leading the effort for Mount Si was Katie Somers who shot a 44, followed by Alyssa Bliven who shot a 52. Jen Sanford, Katie Stapleton and Becky Wada all shot a 54 followed by Jode Smith with a 55. Gina Zanella shot a 56 and Whitney Eand shot a 57.

Medalist for the match was Lisa Kim of Issaquah with a 39.

Mount Si shutout by Knights

The Mount Si girls tennis team was dominated by the Newport Knights in girls tennis action last Tuesday. The Knights won all nine matches against the Wildcats.

“Newport is an excellent team. Their lineup is extremely deep. It’ll be fun to see how they match up with Mercer Island in the final match of the regular season,” said Mount Si coach Sue Gallacher in an e-mail. Gallacher added that she thinks the Knights and MI will likely play for the league title.

In the singles matches, Newport easily won all six contests. Angela Pham defeated Erika Strine 6-1 and 6-2; Tiffany Vo took care of Alina Plavsky 6-0, 6-2; Denise Lin routed Britta Safstrom by the same score as the Vo-Plavsky match, 6-0, 6-2; Hope Lee shut out Nicole Vanourek 6-0, 6-0; and Claudia Golden also served up a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Rebecca Coffey. Janelle Campbell had the best luck for the Wildcats against a Knights player in singles, but she still was beaten by Newport player Millie Fung, 6-2 and 6-3.

In the doubles matches, it was no different. The Strine/Plavsky tandem were thumped 6-2, 6-3 by Kristin Moseby and Casey Roh; the Safstrom/Vanourek pair was defeated 6-2, 6-4 by Michele Miyachi and Michelle Pham; and to round out the complete domination by one of Kingco’s best in the Knights, Lee paired up with Gina Newman to beat Nene Gonzalez and Kathryn McFarland of the Wildcats 6-0, 6-1.

“It can be a little frustrating playing a team like that,” Gallacher said.

That said, she thinks there may be a positive to being totally dominated in a match like these girls were.

“Our kids really raise the level of their play as well, so as long as we learn from the experience and take that into our next match, I’ll take it,” Gallacher added.

Team falls to Newport

The teams of Mariah Stevens/Katie Woolsey, Brittany Whims/Amber McCrory and Kendra Kinghorn/Britni Schwab all won their doubles matches.
