School board selects single makeup day

Students in the Snoqualmie Valley School District will attend school for one additional day this summer to make up class time lost to severe winter weather, the Snoqualmie Valley School District Board of Directors decided last week.
However, class time is also being extended for 12 weeks worth of early release Fridays – two hours currently used for teacher training – to make sure that students make up the balance of four days of lost class time.
The board selected the first of three touted options last Thursday. Other options included adding two days in June and eliminating early release on nine Fridays, or adding three days and ending early release on six Fridays.
However, the board opted to keep the number of extra class days to a minimum. Now, the last day of school will be June 26.
Including the March 1 snow day, local schools canceled nine days this year due to weather.
The decision allows Snoqualmie schools the possibility of extending the calendar by a few more June days, if another weather disruption impacts the district.
