Postcards from China

Published 9:34 am Thursday, October 2, 2008

Voyaging from the Valley, recent Snoqualmie resident Rebecca Virata is exploring the sights, sounds and smells of a country half a globe away.

Virata, a resident of Snoqualmie since 1998, moved to China this spring after her husband Rufino was asked to work in Sichuan Province by his company, which manufactures hoist equipment.

Virata, who is Filipino, now lives in Luzhou, a city in the Sichuan Province of the People’s Republic of China. She recently shared some of her experiences and impressions.

Sights of Sichuan

“People here like to exercise in parks or public places,” Virata said. “Sichuan women are supposed to be known for their beauty in China. They like to grow their hair long, perm it and color it dark blonde. They like to wear colorful frilly dresses and fancy shoes, high heels even when hiking up hills. The men sport boxlike haircuts. In spite of the one-child policy, there are toddlers galore and they wear pants with holes on their backside, instead of diapers.”
