North Bend building moratorium extended

North Bend will have to wait a few more months for water rights. The City Council approved a 6-month extension on the construction moratorium first imposed in April 1999 at its Tuesday, Sept. 4, meeting. State law requires applicants for subdivision or development to provide evidence of valid water rights. The city has insufficient water rights to meet existing use and is in the process of obtaining new water rights. Ron Garrow, city public works director, said the plan to obtain water from Hobo Springs is nearing completion. The state Department of Ecology is wrapping up its public comment process to grant North Bend the certification the city needs to proceed with the project. Once granted, it will take five to six months to build the infrastructure needed to obtain the water, Garrow said.
