Former North Bend City Manager gets jail time

Battling to the end, former North Bend and McCall, Idaho, City

Manager Brian Olson was sentenced Thursday, Oct. 7, to 10 days in jail

for domestic battery.

Magistrate Judge Patricia Young sentenced Olson to 180 days in jail, with

170 days suspended. He was credited with one night in jail – which he spent

following his arrest in Dec. 1998 – and was given the option of serving

the remaining nine days in Valley County or in Vancouver, Wash., where he

currently resides.

Judge Young also ordered Olson to pay court costs and $791 to the

Valley County Prosecuting Attorney’s office to cover the costs of moving

the trial to Ada County. Olson was also placed on unsupervised probation

for two years and fined $1,000, but the fine was suspended.

Olson was also directed to either enroll in a 12-month

psychological program in Vancouver or be reevaluated for anger management by

Boise psychologist Tom Wilson.

A Boise court found Olson guilty of domestic battery in August

following a two-day trial. The jury found Olson had punched his former

girlfriend, Kimberly Cantlen, in the face and kicked her out of his pickup

truck with both feet on the evening of Dec. 20, 1998. The city of McCall

subsequently fired Olson, who had previously departed North Bend

under stormy circumstances.

Right up to the end, Olson’s defense attorney, Ellison Matthews,

submitted motions to acquit Olson and arrange for a new trial. Judge

Young denied the motion for a new trial.
