Bear captured in North Bend

Published 9:41 am Thursday, October 2, 2008

Maybe it was the trail of Krispy Kremes that was his undoing.

Or maybe it was the leftover chicken carcass that lured him into the big, can-shaped metal trap parked in Laura Ward’s driveway off Southwest 10th Street in North Bend.

Either way, the early morning snacks earned the big black bear a one-way trip out of town.

The bear, estimated to be 5 years old and 250 pounds by officers from the Washington Depart-ment of Fish and Wildlife, had been troubling the neighborhood for the last 10 days, making a big mess every Tuesday – trash day.

“The trash goes out, the bear comes out,” Ward said. “He went through everyone’s trash, took out bags, went through the bags he wanted, left the rest of them.”
