It was a tough week for the Mount Si Wildcat softball team as weather forced the postponements of all three games; they did, however, make up one of those contests March 21 against Mercer Island.

In a game moved back a day from last Tuesday to last Wednesday thanks to a late winter snowstorm, the Wildcat bats went to work early and often against Islander pitching, posting a 14-0, five-inning victory over MI. The game was called early due to the 10-run mercy rule, and not a moment too soon as it started raining shortly thereafter.

“I appreciated our approach at the plate,” said Mount Si coach Larry White. “We’ve been standing around hesitant at the plate and today the girls came out swinging and it made a big difference for us.

All nine players who started scored runs in the game, and many of the reserves also got a chance to play.

The big inning for the Wildcats came at the bottom of the second. Mount Si sent a total of 12 hitters to the plate in the inning and scored nine times to blow the game wide open. The key to that offensive explosion was a historic blast. With two out, Kyleen Sweepe hit a line drive over the right center field fence, scoring Daniele Covello. Sweepe’s homer was the first by a Wildcat player on their home field since it opened a little more than a year ago. Liberty’s Michelle Ruby hit a home run last year to be the first player overall to hit one out of the Wildcats’ diamond.

“I just waited on it and I liked it and I took it out,” Sweepe said.
