Wildcat track sweeps tough foe

Heavy rain didn’t stop the Mount Si track and field teams from posting a big sweep against good-as-ever Skyline opposition.

Heavy rain didn’t stop the Mount Si track and field teams from posting a big sweep against good-as-ever Skyline opposition.

The Wildcats had plenty of big performances in the stormy meet last Thursday, April 2, which ended with a 75-70 girls final score and a whopping 83-62 boys victory. None were bigger, though, than the performance by senior Kyle Stevens, who set a new school record in the javelin. Stevens threw 190 feet, seven inches to set the new mark and win the event.

“It’s sweet, but it’s only the second meet and I want to keep getting that up,” said Stevens, who won discus as well. He hopes for a continuous streak of record-breaking efforts.

“Kyle’s school record is outstanding,” said boys coach Chris Jackson. “It’s really a plus, especially considering the weather.”

“All the kids handled the weather and the conditions really, really well” he added. “I’m very proud of the way they competed against a really good Skyline team.”

Senior Brandon Roddewig won three events, including high jump, long jump and pole vault, and Dylan Woll took the boys’ shot put with a 42-foot, five-and-a-quarter-inch throw.

Ryan Frazier won the 100 meter race with a time of 11.5 seconds, while Max McDevitt took the 1,600 meter race. Collin Van Slyke won the 300 metre hurdles.

“I had a great race. I went out strong, took the lead right at the beginning and held it,” McDevitt said.

On the girls’ side, throwing and jumping events went well for Mount Si. Diana Keller took the long jump with a 15 foot, seven-inch leap, while Stephanie Burk won the high jump. Tori Howell dominated the discus, winning with a 96 feet, one inch throw, nearly 10 feet past the second place finisher, Skyline’s Elena Frerker. Molly Meyers picked up the win in the shot put for the Wildcats

On the track, the results were led by a sweep in the 200 meter, with Nikki Stanton, Hannah Hasbun and Natalie Opsvig taking first, second, and third respectively. Stanton was all about doing her best.

“I just run as fast as I can,” she said.

Opsvig felt she could do better.

“I didn’t do as well as I could have because of the rain,” Opsvig said. “It was kind of hard to see at the end.”

The race was run during the heaviest of the rain showers that affected the second half of the competition.

Stanton and Hasbun narrowly missed a one-two sweep in the 100 meter race, finishing a tenth of a second behind Skyline star Kiara Williams, who tied with teammate Rachael Butenko for the Spartan victory.

Lindsay Kirby won the 400 meter race for the Wildcats, while Megan Past took the 800 meter. Kendall Maddux was the lone girl competing in the 3,200 meter race, and fared well despite the poor conditions, finishing with a time of 13:30.7.

Rounding out the Wildcat victors was Keller in the 100 meter hurdles, with a time of 15.8 seconds.

“We performed well in lousy weather conditions,” said a pleased Wildcat girls’ coach Dave Clifford. “All the kids gave a good effort.”

Mount Si is off until Thursday, April 16, when they travel to Juanita to meet the Rebels.
