Wildcat boys tennis finding it rough this season, but future looks bright

The Mount Si High School tennis team has struggled this fall, going winless in their first seven matches thus far, including last Tuesday’s, Oct. 5, match against Interlake.

The Wildcats were blanked in all seven contests played against the Saints, but saw some fair results. Doubles saw a 6-1, 6-3 loss for Tyler Mrachek and Shane Hennig against Interlake’s Kirk Morrison and Joe Motto, while Andrew Bottemiller posted the best result in defeat in the singles, falling to the Saints’ David Golub 6-1, 6-3.

Mount Si’s top prospect, Camden Foucht, fell 6-0, 6-0 to Luat Le of Interlake, and despite the loss, he’s not planning on making any changes to his game.

“I’m just playing it out,” the freshman said. “I’m going to keep practicing until I’m a junior, and then see what happens.”

He said it’s really an issue of gaining experience against his opponents at this level.

“Most of them have the same game as me. It’s just more developed,” Foucht said.

Wildcat coach Jim Gibowski had praise for Foucht, who is only part of a strong freshman class; there are several others in junior varsity, and Gibowski is expecting a lot from the entire class of 2014.

“We’re really looking forward to them growing as tennis players, getting bigger and practicing more in the offseason,” he said.

Mrachek is seeing positives in what has been a tough season.

“It’s been rough, but we’ve been improving a lot. Me personally, I’ve gotten a lot better,” he said.

The season is winding down, with tough competition such as Mercer Island and Liberty rounding out the regular season before the Kingco Tournament. Mrachek hopes fans see a lot.

“We’ve got some tough opponents coming up, but we’re going to try our hardest and hopefully come out with a good result,” he said.
