Leela Bilow, Ashley Svarthumle, Sam Baldwin and Rachelle Starkel each had one hit. Emily White pitched the entire game.

JV blasts Ballard

In a season opening, nonleague game last week, the Mount Si junior-varsity boys’ soccer team played host to the Ballard Beavers and sent them packing with a 5-1 loss.

Tyler Farrar began the scoring for the ‘Cats with an assist from teammate Kyle Doty just five minutes into the game. The Beavers answered with their one and only goal.

The ‘Cats’ defense held the Beavers at bay while the offense continued to display its passing skills. Chris Ippolito scored with an assist from Skye Potter, and two minutes later, Ippolito picked up a pass from Joe Gebhard for goal No. 3.

Second-half action included a goal from Nick McCarty with a pass from Gebhard, and Farrar finished the scoring when he converted a crossing pass from McCarty.

‘Cats win opener

Mount Si boys’ varsity soccer action began fast against Ballard last week with the final score 3-0 in the Wildcats’ favor.

Dan Talevich scored a goal just two minutes into the game on an assist from Drew Arenth. Evan Lamon scored the second goal, unassisted, 17 minutes into the game.

The defense left Ballard scoreless, even as Roger Patterson scored the third and final goal of the game on an assist from Arenth. Keepers Eddie Becker and Kellon Patterson were credited with the shutout.

‘C’ team beats Juanita

The Wildcat’s boys’ “C” soccer team defeated Juanita last week 2-1.

Aaron Duncan scored two goals, the first with an assist by Alex Haga. Colin Parson anchored the defense at sweeper while the midfield was controlled by Evan Lloyd and John Butler.

Rick Coulter was credited with 60 scoreless minutes at goal, and Jeff Lewis played a strong 20 minutes as keeper.

Wildcats beat Juanita

Because of a scheduling error, the Mount Si Wildcats boys’ “C” soccer team showed up at Juanita expecting to play the Rebel’s “C” team but found themselves playing Juanita’s junior-varsity squad. The Wildcats boys came home with an impressive 1-0 win.

Keeper Jeff Lewis had save after save and a stellar effort in the final moments when he stripped the ball from an oncoming player to preserve the win and record the shutout.

The game-winning goal came at 70 minutes when Pete Olson dribbled the length of the field and shot from 20 yards out. The shot was deflected into the air by a defender, but Olson turned and used a bicycle kick to put the ball into the net.

JV defeats Rebels

The Mount Si boys’ junior-varsity soccer team came on strong and claimed another victory by defeating the Juanita Rebels 2-0.

The first goal came in the 17th minute as Kyle Doty made an incredible throw toward the mouth of the goal, causing a Rebel defender to deflect the ball into the net.

Joe Gebhard scored the second goal as he picked up a pass from a corner kick. Defenders Caleb McDaniels and Kyle Pillo did a great job of directing the defense to keep the Rebels out of the net. Jonathon Neilson and Kellon Patterson are credited with the shutout.

The week in Mount Si baseball

Last week the Mount Si Wildcats baseball team was scheduled to open with two nonleague games against Juanita and Franklin Pierce. However, due to inclement weather, the Mount Si-Juanita game has not yet been played; it has been rained out twice already with the game now scheduled to be played Monday, weather permitting.

But the ‘Cats did get in their game against the Cardinals, losing 7-1.

The Cardinals scored three quick runs in the first two innings, and then they blew it open with a four-run fourth inning.

Sophomore left fielder Alex Smart made an impact right away in his first varsity game for Mount Si. He picked up his first varsity base hit in his first at-bat, and finished with a 3-for-3 afternoon, including a double and a run scored.

Fellow sophomore first baseman Ian Opsal’s hit scored Smart in the sixth inning for Mount Si’s lone run, breaking up the Cardinals’ shutout bid. Freshman catcher Brandon Sales, the only freshman on the team, also got a base hit in his first varsity at-bat in the fifth.

Pitchers Taylor McLellan and Nick Kirschner made their first-ever varsity appearances on the mound, and senior Bryce Kaestner also threw for Mount Si. McLellan started, and took the loss for the Wildcats.

Mount Si coach Gary McGregor was unhappy about the large number of walks given up by his pitching staff – 8 total – but had praise for Kirschner.

“Nick Kirschner pitched an inning and did a fine job,” he said.

McGregor also indicated his team has some bugs to work out before it starts its conference schedule.

“I thought overall, we played pretty well,” he said. “We were a little tentative on defense, not going after some fly balls, which cost us five runs. It did not show up as an error but we know they should have been.” Mount Si was charged with one error in the game.

As for the conference opener Tuesday against Issaquah, McGregor wants his seniors’ experience to show. “We need our seniors to step up a little bit more. We open league play with Issaquah and we need to get better if we are going to be successful in KingCo.”

The week in Mount Si soccer

The Mount Si Wildcats boys’ varsity soccer team played two games last week – a nonleague match against Juanita on Tuesday in Kirkland, and a league battle against Bellevue on Friday.

Mount Si Wildcats 2, Juanita Rebels 2

Mount Si got goals from Drew Arenth and Owen Tucker, finishing in a 2-2 tie against the Rebels, from the KingCo 4A Conference. Both of the Mount Si goalkeepers, Kellon Patterson and Eddie Becker, each saw action, with Patterson shutting out the Rebels through the first half and Becker seeing action in the second half.

Arenth’s goal was scored on a Juanita turnover, and Tucker scored on an assist from Dan Barnes to give Mount Si a 2-0 lead. But Juanita came back with a goal on an indirect kick, and then picked up the tying goal after working through the Mount Si defense.

Bellevue Wolverines 1, Mount Si Wildcats 0

A goal by Bellevue’s Brad Ramaley 21 minutes into the game lifted the Wolverines over Mount Si 1-0. Ramaley swiped the ball from a Wildcat player and beat the keeper one-on-one to score the game winner.
