Battle of the Birds approaching

Two key Battle of the Birds matchups are approaching for Chief Kanim Middle School and Snoqualmie Middle School involving the girls’ soccer teams and the the boys’ basketball teams.

The soccer teams will compete for bragging rights on Monday, March 25, at the Snoqualmie Ridge fields. The varsity teams will compete on the lower field while the junior-varsity teams will play on the upper field. Game time for both is 3 p.m. and admission is free.

On March 28 at Mount Si High School, the boys’ basketball teams will play each other. Both games should prove to be great contests. The seventh-grade varsity will start at 6 p.m. and the eighth-grade varsity will follow. Snoqualmie Middle School’s drill team will perform as part of the half-time entertainment.

Admission for the boy’s basketball games will be $2 for adults and high-school students, $1 for elementary and middle-school students without an ASB card and free to middle-school students with an ASB card. Children under 6 will also be admitted free if accompanied by a paying adult.

Concessions will be available through the Chief Kanim Middle School ASB.


Seventh-grade Hawks down Eagles

The Chief Kanim Middle School seventh-grade boys’ varsity basketball team traveled to Snoqualmie Middle School last week where it defeated a hustling Eagles team 48-20.

The Hawks used an aggressive press and controlled the boards to pull out the win. Both teams showed good sportsmanship and hustle. Leading the effort for the Hawks was Tommy Abbott, scoring 13 points and pulling down 14 rebounds. Brandon Yakabowski had eight points and three assists, and Tanner Ostby had seven points and three steals.

Nick Johnston recorded six points and nine rebounds. Bret Handy had four points and four rebounds. Keegan Riley had four points and two steals. Miles Whitaker had three points and two steals. Sean Bothell had four rebounds and played excellent defense, and Bryce Macewan had two points and two assists.


Hawks blast Issaquah

The Chief Kanim Middle School seventh-grade boys’ varsity basketball team traveled to Issaquah last week, winning 43-27.

The Hawks used an intense defense and capitalized on turnovers to record the win. Leading the team was Bret Handy with 11 points and two steals. Tommy Abbott recorded 10 points and five blocked shots. Miles Whitaker had eight points and six steals. Nick Johnston had four points and seven boards. Brandon Yakabowski had four points and two steals. Sean Bothell recorded four points and two steals. Keegan Riley had two points and two steals and both Tanner Ostby and Bryce Macewan showed excellent hustle and defense.

JV girls beat Keithly

The Snoqualmie Middle School girls’ junior-varsity soccer team beat Keithly last week 3-0 by playing well on both the offensive and defensive ends of the field.

On the offensive side, forward Jenny Daley scored two goals and Kate Rohan had one. Defensively, the team kept the ball out of its zone and did not let Keithly take any good shots at the net.

Katie Stapleton and the rest of the defense played a super game. Danielle Halverson did an excellent job of moving the ball up to the forwards and helping out the SMS defense.


Chief Kanim continues streak

The Chief Kanim boys’ seventh-grade varsity basketball team traveled to Maywood last week where it defeated Maywood 72-32.

The Hawks used an effective fast break to run Maywood off the floor. The Hawks’ defense was also extremely stingy and coach Blake said he was very pleased with the teamwork his team showed showed.

The Hawks’ stars for the game include Bret Handy with 17 points and two steals, Brandon Yakabowski with six points and seven assists, Tommy Abbott with 15 points and 12 rebounds, Nick Johnston with six points and 11 rebounds, Miles Whitaker with 12 points and two steals, Keegan Riley with five points and two assists, Sean Bothell with four points and six rebounds, Tanner Ostby with three points and two assists and Bryce Macewan with four points and two assists.
