SNOQUALMIE – Every step she takes she gets faster, stronger and closer to the top. With every step she is reeling in another opponent, sparking that adrenaline rush and securing a spot for herself among the best. Another day is another chance for Devan Paulus to train harder and get faster.

The best part of the season has just started for Paulus. On Thursday, Sept. 30, Paulus had her breakthrough race against Newport, and hasn’t slowed since. Running with the front pack for the entire race, she pushed herself to the max and proved that she belongs at the top.

“It finally felt good,” she said. “I feel like I can get faster now.”

Last Wednesday she did just that, finishing ninth in a four-way meet against Bellevue, Interlake and Sammamish. She ran 35 seconds faster than her last outing on the same course two weeks ago. Finishing close behind her was teammate Katie Hogan running her best race yet. Starting out in a pack, Hogan, Arianne Barr and Meaghan Dunklee all were running strong and pulling each other along to move quickly past other runners. It is every cross country coaches’ dream to have her runners run as a pack and take over the race. These ladies are getting closer to that with every race, but this race was a huge breakthrough.

Hogan broke away from the pack in the middle of the race and finished with a huge personal record (PR). Barr also brought it up a notch and hung on with Dunklee as long as she possibly could. Her effort was impressive. Eleisha Davis, a sophomore who is new to the team, also raced well to hold off an Interlake runner at the finish chute. Davis came away with a personal best and a new confidence which will carry over to the next meet. This was a hard week of practice and these girls did not come into this meet rested. It really proved that the training had paid off and there are better things right around the corner.

In a highly anticipated battle between Interlake and Mount Si, the Mount Si boys’ team came out on top, edging out Interlake 27-30. This placed Mount Si second for the four-way meet.

Right from the gun, Rob Jepson shot out to the front to take charge. Ever since his first race against Sammamish, where he had a lot left at the end, he has really stepped it up and run hard the entire race instead of saving and sprinting. A person doesn’t always know if they are going to be able to hold a hard pace for 3.1 miles, and the tendency is to back out. It takes pure guts and confidence in your training to dig into a hard pace, engage in tough competition and stick with it the whole time.

Jepson sat fourth for most of the race, but on the final loop his blazing start caught up with him, and he mustered up all he could to hold off an Interlake runner who was right behind him to finish seventh. Brad Allen came through once again to lead his team, steadily working his way past people to finish in sixth place. He dipped below 18 minutes to drop 10 seconds off his previous time for that course. Drake da Ponte also went out hard, running up front for as long as he could, finishing in 10th place. Thomas Goble was close behind finishing in 13th place. He didn’t let up the entire race and kept gaining momentum all the way to the finish. After an awesome race against Newport, Colin Parsons fell a little short this week battling a cold, but he will be right back in it next week. Behind the top five, Owen Strom and Robby Pekara ran phenomenally together, finishing with awesome times. It was impressive how Pekara hung in there with Strom the entire race. He left everything out there.

This Thursday the cats are hosting a four-way meet against Mercer Island, Liberty and Issaquah. It starts at 4 p.m., and there is going to be some great competition.
