SMS cross country running strong
The Snoqualmie Middle School (SMS) cross country team has gotten off to a successful start with three meets in the span of one week. The first meet was the invitational hosted by Issaquah Middle School and included seven teams.
SMS’s 6th-grade boys took second-place overall with Dustin Breashers coming in second overall, Nate Chase ninth and Eric Baumgardner 10th. Carter Williamson, Taylor Mitchell, Eythan Frost and Adam Lewis also competed.
The 6th-grade girls’ team did not place but had a fine showing with Dannah Parsons coming in seventh overall. Isabel Rader, Alexis Pearlstein and Danielle Clark also competed. The Eagle 7th- and 8th-grade girls’ team came in third overall with Megan Past coming in eighth and Alex Rudd in 11th place. Danielle Crabtree, Nikki Buzzell and Alyssa Melin also competed. The 7th- and 8th-grade boys did not place but Brett Duncan, Chase Adams, Matthew Lynne, Devon Aberle, Ryan Simpson and Matt Prewett competed in the meet.
The second SMS meet of the season was a home meet against Island Middle School. Mercer Island came out on top in the scoring, however, SMS had a great showing with 6th-graders Parsons and Bamgardner coming in first, Breashers taking second and Nate Chase and Rader taking sixth place. For the 7th- and 8th-grade team, Past took first place, Rudd in fourth place and Crabtree in sixth place. Duncan took seventh for the boys.
The third meet was against Chief Kanim at the Chief Kanim course. The Eagles were strong but only came out on top with the 6th-grade boys’ score. Breashers, Baumgardner and Chase came in first, second and third. Mitchel came in seventh with Kyle Florence eighth, Eythan Frost ninth, Williamson 10th, Alex Anderson 11th and Adam Lewis 14th. Parson finished first for the 6th-grade girls with Pearlstein fifth and Clark seventh. Andrew Klausing, in his first race this year, came in third for the 7th-and 8th-grade boys and Duncan took fourth place. The 7th- and 8th-grade girls’ team tied with Chief Kanim with Past placing second, Rudd fourth, Crabtree fifth, Alix Crandell sixth, Nikki Buzzell eighth and Alyssa Melin ninth.
The Eagles have three more meets. The first is on Oct. 14 at their home course at 4 p.m., the following two meets are at Tolt and Lake Sammamish Oct. 21 and 28.
Hawks defeat Eagles
The Chief Kanim Middle School (CKMS) Hawks’ 7th-grade football team traveled to Snoqualmie Middle School (SMS) recently and defeated a tough Eagle team 2-0 in a defensive battle.
Both teams were looking for a big play from someone, and CKMS’s defense made it happen late in the game. Vince Vasquez made a huge tackle on an SMS running back. Lucas Zupan and Eric Murphy had back-to-back quarterback sacks to give the Hawks great field position. The Hawks then drove down the field to the Eagles’ 20-yard line with 1 minute left in the game. The Hawks couldn’t put the ball in the end zone, but backed the Eagles deep in their own territory. Zupan then had the play of the game as he recorded his third quarterback sack of the game in the end zone for a safety and a 2-0 win.
Hawk stars included Tanner Riley with 12 passes for 80 yards and one interception; Vasquez with 14 yards and three tackles; Murphy with three tackles and one sack; Zupan with two tackles and three sacks; and Chris Hindmarch with five tackles.
Chief Kanim at Thunder Mountain
The Chief Kanim Middle School (CKMS) varsity football team traveled to Thunder Mountain Middle School in Enumclaw on Tuesday, Oct. 5. The Hawks wasted no time as they received the opening kickoff and marched down the field.
Joey Evans scored on a 26-yard run and the Hawks led 6-0. More of the same in the first half gave the Hawks a commanding 18-0 lead. In the second half, CKMS held tight on defense and scored another touchdown on a Stu Hallock run. The final score was Chief Kanim 24 and Thunder Mountain 0.
Evans had a monstrous game gaining 182 yards on just 12 carries. Alex Hiebert and the entire line did an outstanding job opening up holes for the Hawk running backs.
On defense, Zach Kirschmeyer led the Hawks with four solo tackles. Also shining on defense were Michael Nelson, Mark Stetson, Evans and Tyson Riley. Chief Kanim racked up 290 yards of offense while holding Thunder Mountain to less than 50. The varsity Hawks will host White River Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
Eighth-graders win vollyball match
The 8th-grade varsity volleyball team for Chief Kanim Middle School (CKMS) won their match last week against Snoqualmie Middle School (SMS) 25-13, 25-16. Player of the game for the first game was Nikki Stanton with 11 serves in a row, five of them were aces. Stanton had four kills for the night as well.
In the second game, the star was Danielle Fulfs with five aces and seven points total. She was also hot attacking at the net. Brittany Cragin and Bethany Frieler were the back bone of the team keeping the rallies going and hitting the floor hard to save points. They were also strong in serving, scoring a combined seven aces and total of 12 points.
CKMS’s 7th-grade girls beat SMS last week in two out of three games. The girls played with more team work, communication and enthusiasm. Consistent servers were coming from Kayla Wargi and Danielle Covello. Abby Peterson was successful with serves when they were needed the most. McKenzie Curly had the winning serve in game one and was recognized by her coaches as most valuable player of the match.
