Alex Grazda continued his stellar season by winning the javelin, high jump and the discus. Brady Barry kept his dual meet winning streak alive in the 100 and 200 meter as well. He hasn’t been defeated yet in league competition.

Adam Rothgeb continued to show why he is one of the best athletes on the Eastside by winning the 110 and 300-meter hurdles. He also ran down and vanquished a Newport runner who took the baton with a five-yard headstart in the 4×100 relay. He pulled out the win in the final leg of the event.

The combination of Rothgeb, Sean Bothell, Frank McLaughlin and Barry won in a season best of 44.6 seconds. McLaughlin also took third in the long jump and the 200 meter.

JV team struts stuff

The Mount Si JV softball team traveled to Yakima over spring break to play two tough teams on the other side of the state.

Against West Valley, whom they beat 13-7, the ‘Cats found themselves down 0-5 against a tough pitcher. A rally in the fifth inning tied the score. Mount Si then scored two in the sixth and sealed the game with six runs in the seventh on doubles by Amy Whitney, Dennae Englund and Lynnae McKiernan to take a 13-7 win. McKiernan picked up her first win pitching in a complete game. Whitney led the team offensively with four hits and made an outstanding “snow cone” catch to end the game. It was West Valley’s first loss of the season.

There was no doubt, however, who dominated once Mount Si was through with Hanford, 15-3. Mount Si scored in five different innings. Englund had five RBI’s and Faith Hutcherson scored three runs and had three hits. Tricia Coccia had her best pitching performance ever, striking out eight while giving up only one base hit. Camille Weber scored two runs and April Saffell had four outs playing second base. Alicia Elmore scored four runs and was on base five times with several clutch bunts.

‘Cats squeak by Bellevue

On April 8, the Wildcats baseball “C” team regrouped after their loss to Issaquah with a gut check 1-0 win over Bellevue.

“It was a well played game by both teams today. We saw two very good pitching performances and error-free defense from both teams, but the difference today was Jake Handy,” said Warren Brown, C team assistant coach. “Their pitcher threw a four hitter at us, but we scored a run in the first and our pitching and defense made it stand up.”

In the first inning, Ian Brown, leading the team in walks, led off for the ‘Cats with another free pass. After an Evan Aaltonen single and an infield out, Brown scored what turned out to be the game’s only run from second on a Jake Handy single.

From there the pitching was indeed the difference. Handy threw a tidy, complete game, two-hit performance at the Wolverines – seven innings, 81 pitches, 11 strikeouts, zero walks and one hit batter. In the fourth inning the ‘Cat defense backed him up when Bellevue put together a scoring opportunity. With a Bellevue runner on third with one out and the infield drawn in, Trevor Gardunia fielded a hot shot to second and made a strong
