`Cats announce baseball awards

Mount Si baseball announced their season awards for all three teams.

For coach Jeremy Smith’s “C” team _ who had a record of four wins, four

losses and one tie — there were several awards. The Offensive Player

honor went to Steve Mauter with teammate Kyle Doty taking the Defensive

Player award. The Most Improved Player award went to Ryan Johnson.

Scott Buschen led the stat leaders in most innings played (66) while

Nick Kirschner led with hits (13), followed by Mauter with 12. Heath Jones

led in number of doubles (four), while Mauter had three. Kirschner led

with eight RBIs and teammate Nick Johnson had seven.

John Paul Likes led the batting average category as he went

8-for-17 with a .471 average. Second was Mauter at 12-for-26 with a .462

average and third was Nick Kirschner who went 13-for-31 with a .419

average. Doty led the stolen base category with seven.

For the pitching duties, Jonas Bekins went 22.1 innings

and Kirschner went 18.2 innings. Kirschner also led with wins

notching two with one loss. Heath Jones led in strikeouts with 18 while Bekins

had 17. Bekins recorded a 2.19 earned run average while Jones had a 2.88.

Team members for the 2000 season were Chad Charbonneau,

Doty, Nick Johnson, Likes, Kirschner, Mike Schwab, Bekins, Buschen,

Ryan Johnson, Jones and Mauter.

The Junior varsity team recorded nine wins and 11 losses and

was coached by Verne Newell. The teams Most Inspirational award went

to Brandon Bumpus while Most Improved went to Garret Parsons.

Scott Johnson received the Most Valuable Player award for the season.

For the stat leaders, Johnson led most innings played (132) while

teammate G.C. Hillburn had 130. Johnson also led the hit category at 21

while Hillburn had 16. Leading the doubles category was Johnson again with

five. Dan Baldwin led the RBIs with eight while Nick Harpel had seven.

Johnson led the batting averages category going 21-for-60 for a .350 average.

Bruce Opsal went 7-for-22 for a .318 average. Johnson also led in stolen

bases with 13.

For the pitching duties, Johnson led with 39 innings, Bumpus with

38 and Harpel with 34. Harpel also recorded the most wins at three, had

a 4.32 ERA and had 21 strikeouts. Bumpus had 30 strikeouts and a

4.05 ERA. The team consisted of Jeremy Bess, Harpel, Johnson, Dan

Baldwin, Hillburn, Bumpus, Opsal and Parsons.

The varsity team, coached by Gary McGregor and Charlie Cabe, had

eight wins and 15 losses, making it to the league tournament. The team’s

Defensive Player Award went to Joey Adams while Aaron Svarthumle received

the Offensive Player honor. The Coaches Award went to Nick Roeber and

the Most Valuable Player Award went to Marc Dahm.

Team captains were Adams and Matt Murphy. Sean Sattler made

the KingCo Second Team as a utility player while honorable mentions

went to Adams, Murphy and Svarthumle.

Leading the stat department was Marc Dahm with 22 hits, going

22-for-67 for a .328 average and recording 13 RBIs. Svarthumle had 19

hits, going 19-for-57 for a .333 batting average, recording 141 innings

played with six doubles and 14 RBIs. Adams had 67 at bats with 16 runs

scored. Sattler had 136 innings played while teammate Nick Roeber went

8-for-24 for a .333 batting average and recording seven stolen bases. Also

leading the stats were Murphy with five doubles and Tyler Osborn with

nine stolen bases.

Pitching was led by Bryce Kaestner who pitched 34 innings,

recording 24 strikeouts and one save. Sattler had 33 innings pitched,

22 strikeouts, four wins and two losses. Brent Clarke had one save and

Mike Dahm had a 2.96 earned run average.

Varsity letter winners for the 2000 season were Kaestner, Josh

Serrick, Steve Botulinski, Clarke, Mike and Marc Dahm, Dan Flood,

David LaBelle, Osborn, Matt Poth, Sattler, Svarthumle, Adam

VandeBrake, Adams, Murphy, Roeber and Michael Lawrence.

Mount Si to host tournament

Mount Si High School will host the first Men’s Alumni

Basketball Tournament on June 24 and 25

Wildcats to hold hoop camp

Mount Si varsity basketball coach Garrick Phillips announced that

the Wildcats will hold a basketball camp for young athletes. The camps will

be held from June 21-23 and 26-30. The boys basketball camp will run from

9 a.m. to noon for grades three through five and from 1 to 4 p.m. for

grades six through eight.

Golf team takes third in state

The Mount Si men’s golf team took third in state recently led by

Junior Sean Fallows. Fallows finished with a combined two-day score of

151, good enough for 13th place. Sophomore Sean Armstrong finished

22nd with a combined two-day score of 154 while teammate Eric Larson, also

a sophomore, finished 37th with a score of 159.

“We are very excited about next season,” said coach Garrick

Phillips. “Twelve of the top golfers from

this year’s team are underclassmen and will be returning next year,” he added.

Mount Si was the only KingCo team in competition for the top

team in state and the only KingCo team with three golfers in the state finals.
