TThe Mount Si varsity boys’ soccer team, before heading into spring break, had two games last week: at Sammamish and at home Friday against Liberty.
Sammamish 5, Mount Si 2
Despite a goal and an assist from Drew Arenth, the Wildcats couldn’t pick up the win Monday against Sammamish at Sammamish High School. Pete Talevich also scored a goal, but Sammamish’s Eric Williams had two goals and Keith Alger had three assists to lead the Totems, who scored early and often.
Liberty 1, Mount Si 0
In a game held under rainy skies Friday night at Mount Si High School, the Patriots and Wildcats played a defensive game, with very few scoring opportunities. The lone goal came from the Patriots at the 34-minute mark, which proved to be controversial.
The shot appeared to have hit the top crossbar, but the referees stopped play shortly after and discussed it. After a couple of minutes, the referees, much to the delight of the Liberty fans, ruled it a goal.
Mount Si’s Pete Talevich summed it up best: “Liberty has one of the top defenses in the league, if not the top, and the top goalkeeper. We’re hoping to play them with a low-scoring game, and we did. The goal is pretty disappointing. We don’t feel that it crossed the line, but you just hate to lose a game 1-0 with a goal that we don’t think went in the net.”
“Both teams played their hearts out, and whether [the goal] was in or not, it’s hard to tell. That’s the way the game goes. But it was a good game, everybody played hard, and that’s what you want,” said coach Glenn Cramer.
The Wildcats are now on spring break and do not return to action until April 16. They host a game against the Bellevue Wolverines at 7:30 p.m. at Mount Si.
