Mixed bag for Valley fencers

Fall City teen fencers Grace and Holly Madland had mixed results at the summer USA Fencing Nationals event, held recently in San Jose.

Grace had a couple of solid finishes. She finished 24th out of 69 competitors in the Division II sabre fencing competition, and in a tie for 29th out of 76 entrants in the Division III event. She had some struggles, too, finishing 47th out of 81 participants in the Cadet competition, and 41st in the Division IA event, out of just 45 competitors.

Overall, Grace said she was very happy with her performance.

Holly had a tougher time, finishing tied for 81st out of 86 fencers in the Junior sabre event, 42nd in the Division IA competition, and 65th in the Cadet event.

Their junior team, from Salle Auriol in Seattle, was 14th out of 17 teams in the team event.

Grace and Holly both maintained their fencing designations as a result of their efforts in California.
