Mount Si softball summer league off to strong start

The Mount Si Wildcat softball program’s summer league team is off to a good start. The team has a 2-1 record after three games in the Seattle Summer Fast Pitch League, a recreationally-oriented developmental league consisting of 20 teams, mostly high school.

Their sole loss came on Friday, a 6-3 decision at the hands of the Evergreen Wolverines. The first game was supposed to be a doubleheader, but the second game was called due to the opposing team, Highlines’, failure to show for the contest.

Many of the Wildcats’ returning varsity players in 2006 are participating in this league, although on Friday some of them, including stars Kandis Clesson and Katie Morgan, were unavailable due to outside commitments. The absence of those top players meant that the future was displayed prominently on the field and aside from early defensive jitters, which put Mount Si in an early 6-1 hole they were unable to dig out of, summer league coach Lauren Davis is pleased with her team’s effort thus far.

“I’ve really been impressed. When you look out on the field, this defense and offense, really a young group of women, they have really put a 110 percent effort forward, and they really are coachable, so I’m excited,” said Davis, who was the top assistant coach for the softball program during the spring. Regular season Mount Si coach Larry White is Davis’ assistant in the summer program.

Among the possible future stars on the field Friday was Traci Barclay. It appears likely that she will be transferring to Mount Si from 4A Tahoma in time for next spring, as her family will be moving and she’s excited about the possibilities. “I hope we have fun, go out and just play hard, and hopefully we go to state,” said the shortstop/pitcher, who will be a sophomore in 2006.

More honors for Wildcat baseball

Two seniors and a coach who were all integral to the success of the Mount Si baseball program this spring have received additional awards.

Adam Dentz, a first team selection as pitcher, and Brandon Sales, a second team selection as catcher, have been selected to those all-state teams by the Washington State Baseball Coaches Association. Dentz, bound for Washington State next spring, and Sales, bound for Pacific Lutheran, both played in the recent All-State series in Wenatchee, and again last weekend in Vancouver at the Cascade Classic series for the top players from the entire Pacific Northwest. The games were held at Hudson’s Bay High School.

The WSBCA also named Mount Si coach Gary McGregor as 3A coach of the year. He guided the Wildcats to a 16-5 mark despite all of the games being played on the road due to construction on Mount Si’s new field complex. “It is a great honor to be recognized by your peers,” said McGregor by e-mail to the Valley Record, adding, “I was surprised. The guys did a great job on the field, they got it done.”

Hole-in-one

Ben Cox, age 13, made a hole-in-one at Mount Si Golf Course recently. The shot was made on hole No. 4 at a distance of 110 yards using an eight iron. It was his first hole-in-one.

Somers wins junior golf tournament

Mount Si Wildcat sophomore Katie Somers, who just completed a stellar freshman season this spring, won the first of four Washington Junior Golf Association sub-district tournaments last Thursday at Bear Creek Country Club near Redmond. She shot an 82 for her winning effort. With the victory she qualified for the district events and a junior world golf competition July 1.

Basketball team holding camp

The Mount Si boys’ basketball program will be holding a camp for boys basketball players who will be in third-through eighth-grade during the upcoming 2005-2006 school year. The camp, to be held July 18 through 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Snoqualmie Middle School gymnasium, 9200 Railroad Ave S.E., will provide players with many hours of skill development and game action with instruction provided to campers by Mount Si coaches and players.

Cost for the camp is $75- $80. There is a $10 discount per additional camper for families that register more than one participant. All campers will receive a T-shirt, but for the higher fee campers will receive an official camp basketball as well. The deadline to register is July 1. After that, the fees will go up $10 for both levels. For information, call Mount Si head boys basketball coach Garrick Phillips at (425)831-8100 or e-mail him at phillipsg@snoqulamie.k12.wa.us.
