Local gymnast places in meet

North Bend resident, Cherise Athay placed first in the

11-year-old and up age group at the recently held Harbor Classic 200 gymnastics

meet. Her scores of 8.15 in the Vault, 8.10 on the Bars, 8.9 on the Beam and

7.9 on the Floor gave her a combined total of 33.05. Athay is a member

of Gymnastics East in Issaquah.

Local star helps team in playoffs

Former Mount Si star Pam Lovely, now a junior at Western

Washington University, played a role in propelling the team into the elite eight of

the NCAA Division II playoffs. The Vikings defeated Cal State of

Pomona, 84-66 to earn a second seed position from the Western region. The

triumph means the Vikings, 26-3 overall and ranked NO. 13 in the NCAA

II coaches poll, move on to a national quarterfinal at Pine Bluff, Ark.,

on March 22 against Slippery Rock University, the East regional champion.

Cal Poly Pomona, ranked No. 10 nationally and the region’s No. 1

seed, completed its season 26-3 and had a 17-game winning streak snapped,

as well as a 22-game home court string that began early in the 1998-99

season.

Lovely, a 1997 graduate of Mount Si and guard for the Vikings, had

three points in the game as well as four rebounds.
