Middle School sports

A look at sports from the Valley's middle schools.

Eagles thump Yelm

The SMS Eagles soccer team handed Yelm a loss last week,

10-0. The rough and ready Eagles again dominated their opponents in

every area. Capitalizing on a quick kick-off, the first score was recorded by

Kristen Berndt in less than one minute.

The rock-sold midfield work of Ariel Waddell, Kayla Jane, Liz

Mols and Kelly Fletcher kept the team’s efforts directed towards goal

shots. Whitney Chelgren set up Jeanie Franz for the second goal of the

game. Within minutes, Brittanie Griep took the field and scored from midfield.

The offensive skills of the SMS strikers and mid-fielders

maintained pressure through the balance of the game. Other goals were registered

by Chelgren and Vikki Campbell. Defensive work by Liana Felt, Jessica

Wada, Maggie Kujath and Vanessa Scalzo prevented Yelm from penetrating

beyond midfield and allowed the Eagles another shut-out victory.

Hawks squeak out win

The Chief Kanim boys basketball team hosted a hot shooting Pine

Lake team recently but pulled out a narrow win, 53-47. CKMS had to play

catch-up in the first quarter and found themselves trailing, 14-13. With the

game on the line. the team came out in the second quarter and put 18 points

on the board with outstanding play by Hank Kennedy and Jeremy

Johnston. Heading to the locker room at the half, the score was 31-25 in favor of

the Hawks.

In the third, the Hawks came out and found Johnston underneath,

which led to eight points. Kennedy and Mike Lindor added a basket each to hold

off Pine Lake, 44-35.

It was a wild fourth quarter as Pine Lake got within one point but

clutch shots by Johnston, two free throws by Nick Sheldon and one free throw

by Lindor kept the Hawks on top.

Pine Lake shot the ball well and stymied the Hawk’s usually

potent offense. Johnston again led the team with 28 points and 14

rebounds, Kennedy had 18 points and 12 rebounds and Lindor added five

points with 10 boards. Sheldon scored two and had five assists.

The win gives the Hawks a 5-0 record but they have work to be

done before next week’s games. There will be practice on Saturday morning

from 10 to 11:30.

Coach Fowler stated, “This was a wake up call for us and we have

to take every team very seriously. Teams will be up for us and will give their

all to try and knock us off. We must come to play every night and make

adjustments as needed.”

Eagles hold off Maywood

It resembled the charge of the light brigade last week as the

Maywood Chargers squared off in battle with the SMS Eagles boys seventh-grade

basketball team. SMS held the Chargers’ rampage, pulling out the win,

41-33 as the team from Maywood watched helplessly. Derek Donah pulled

the trigger from behind the three-point arc to give the Eagles an 11-5

first-quarter lead.

A lightning quick set of guards and trapping zones sparked a Charger

rally in the second stanza. The surge was temporarily fought off by an

Adam Rothgeb basket and a Chip Delurme rebound put-back. However the

men from Maywood poured in 16 second-quarter points to build a 21-17

halftime lead.

It was time for a house call, and “the doctor,” Zach Elmore, served

the Chargers some lethal medicine. With the game tied at 31, Elmore

reached into his bag of tricks and pulled out a three card to give the Eagles the lead.

The three-point lead was all that Aaron Chadwell needed as he

controlled the boards on both ends of the court and brought home a game

high 22 points. With the presence of Chadwell in the middle,

Maywood had to turn to their quickness on the perimeter. However, Eagle

defensive plays by Alex Grazda, Robert Jepson, and Kyle Dalman pulled the plug

on the Chargers.

Eagles pull one out against Panthers

Coming off an emotional victory against cross-town rival Chief

Kanim Hawks, the SMS Eagles seventh-grade boys basketball team found

themselves sleepwalking through the first half of their game against the

Issaquah Panthers. But the boys from the Upper Valley would eventually pull out

a 40-31 win, despite trailing 18-10 at halftime.

When the buzzer went off to start the second half, it was like an

awakening of the spirits as the young Eagle team realized the game was on the

line. Derek “the glove” Donah pilfered

the pockets of the Panthers point guard to produce a turnover, resulting in

a slashing bucket by Zach Bowen. The Eagles’ nest became a “house of

horrors” to Panther shooters as the pressure and rebounding of

Aaron Chadwell began to take its toll. Good ball movement produced an open

look for “the operator,” Zach Elmore, as

he made a long distance call from three-point land. On the ensuing

possession, Jake Laskody taught the Issaquah guards a lesson in defense as he

stole the ball, went the length of the court for a buck, plus drew the foul

and drilled the free throw.

Any attempts from the Panthers to make a comeback were squelched

by Zach “the Shaq” Bowen as he poured in a game high 17 points and

completed the double, double with 13 rebounds. The final straw that broke

the Panthers’ back was an Adam Rothgeb steal that he converted to a layup.

Hawks down Tolt

The Chief Kanim Middle School, junior varsity eighth-grade Red

Hawk basketball team took on Tolt last Wednesday night, handing the

Totems a 48-29 loss.

The Red Hawks took the early lead and didn’t look back, as they went

on a 16-8 first-quarter scoring run. At halftime they were up 26-15;

40-19 after three.

Scoring for the Red Hawks were Curtis Dorr with 15, Andrew

Conway with 11, Ian Opsal with six, Patrick Haggerty with five, Alec Sattler

and Eric McCammon with four, Jr. Gonzalez and Ben Kruse with two

and Nathan Eddy with one.

Opsal led the team in assists with three, while teammate Dorr had

eight steals and Conway had eight rebounds.

Conway and Dorr were selected offensive players of the game

with Sean Macrae and Gonazalez selected as defensive players of the

game. Haggerty and Eddy were selected best off the bench.

“We successfully used our press today, ran our offense, and shot

well. When Tolt made a run in the third quarter, Andrew and Curtis

combined for three three-pointers to end it,”

said coach Dick Kirby.

The Red Hawks go to four wins and no losses on the season.

SMS boys take one from district rivals

The seventh-grade boys basketball team from SMS took on their

school district rival Chief Kanim Hawks last week in a no-holds-barred contest

for bragging rights. The result was a decisive victory for the Upper

Valley team, Eagles 34, Chief Kanim Hawks, 18.

The Eagles from SMS came out with a defensive intensity that left

the Hawks grounded early in the contest. As is often the case in this rivalry,

the Hawks were prepared to shut down the Eagle offensive attack.

After a first quarter lead of 4-1 by the Hawks, the Eagles sprang into

action, taking advantage of their stingy defense and producing offensive

opportunities due to turnovers. Jake Laskody, Derek Donah and

Zach Elmore applied the pressure while Zach Bowen scorched the net on

the offensive side. Aaron Chadwell handled the rebounding chores

and limited second-chance opportunities for the Hawks. The offensive

output was directed by Donah who moved the ball around the court, creating

easy scoring opportunities for Laskody, Elmore, Bowen and Chadwell.

The offensive surge sparked a 12-0 run in the second quarter. As

seconds ticked away to end the second quarter, Bowen launched a jump

shot that found the hoop just as time expired. The shot gave the Eagles an

18-6 halftime cushion heading to the locker room.

The Hawks came out poised for a comeback in the third quarter but

they were not prepared for what was to come. Each team took turns

dumping buckets in a fast-paced third quarter. But a baseline drive and jump shot

by Elmore that tickled twine turned the tide of the game. Chadw
