head for state, Wildcats depart

In the first round of the Sea-King 3A District volleyball playoffs,

held on Thursday, Nov. 4, the Red Wolves were one of four KingCo teams

to advance to the next level of competition. Regrettably, Mount Si lost

in three matches to Newport, 17-15, 8-15 and 13-15, and was the sole

league representative to depart from further competition.

Cedarcrest went 3-0 in its series, downing Lakeside 15-11, 10-15

and 16-14; Hazen, 16-14 and 15-7; and Kennedy, 12-15, 15-7 and 15-11.

In the game with Lakeside, Cedarcrest’s Katie Power had 12 kills and 26

digs; Erin Townsend, 15 kills; Julie Henry, 30 assists, 3 kills, 3 digs; and

Dorothy Westermann, 2 kills and 14 digs. Against Hazen it was Power, 8

kills, 11 digs and 4 aces; Townsend, 8 kills, 1 block; Henry, 14 assists, 2 kills,

2 aces, 4 digs; Westermann, 2 kills, 4 digs; and Heidi Vandanacker, 2

kills and 1 dig.

In the final match with Kennedy, Power recorded 12 kills, 18 digs

and 3 aces; Towsend, 20 kills, 3 blocks and 3 digs; and Henry, 32 assists, and

3 kills.

The KingCo sweep of the district competition continued that

Saturday at Ballard High School, with Mercer Island, Interlake, Newport

and Cedarcrest all qualifying for the state championship series.

In their quarterfinal opening game, the Red Wolves downed Holy

Names 15-7, 9-15 and 15-10. In the semis they fell to eventual Sea-King

champion Mercer Island by scores of 15-6 and 15-9. Cedarcrest then

succumbed to Newport in the consolation round, 19-15, 15-9 and 11-15, giving

the Wolves a fourth-place district finish and a trip to the next level.

The Islanders took the overall win, downing Interlake 15-12 and 15-9.

“Thursday we finished first in our pool,” said coach Christine

Stefani-Hillstead. “We beat Kennedy; they were 14-0 and seeded number one.

We also beat Hazen and Lakeside.”

“Saturday we played the number two seed from the A-pool,

Holy Names, and qualified for state.”

The state series commences on Friday at St. Martin’s College

in Olympia. During initial play Cedarcrest will take on the teams

from Lynden, White River and Newport High Schools. Match play starts

on Saturday; according to Coach Hillstead, the Red Wolves are

ready to go.

“It was exciting being at districts, in the comfort zone,” she

commented Monday, “and now we’re going to state. It’s the first time we’ve made

it back since I graduated.”
