The KingCo 3A volleyball regular season concluded Monday
night, Oct. 25, and the traditional season-ending contest between Mount Si
and Cedarcrest proved to be a wild one. The Red Wolves finally prevailed
over their Upper Valley visitors in five games, 15-8, 15-8, 7-15, 12-15
and 15-10.
It was one long, tough match. The totals for the winning Cedarcrest
team were Katie Power, 24 kills, 30 digs and 3 aces; Adrea Wickstrom, 47
assists, 3 kills, 3 digs, 7 aces; Erin Townsend, 27 kills; Julie Henry, 9 kills, 4 digs,
2 aces; Dorothy Westermann, 7 digs and 3 aces; and Rachael Barksdale,
12 digs.
Mount Si’s stats were provided by Stephanie Sales, 6 kills, 4 blocks,
and 5 digs; Genevieve Weber, 5 kills, 18 digs, 2 assists; Sheneil Harstad, 1
kill, 4 aces, 9 digs; Kristen Everett, 3 aces, 8 digs, 36 assists; Heather Lewis,
15 kills, 2 aces, 27 digs; Betsy Bankson 12 kills, 2 aces, 12 digs;
Tiffany Durman, 2 kills and 1 dig; and Kristen Roberts, 8 digs.
This game set the stage for the league playoffs, which started
that Thursday evening at Liberty High School in Renton.
Mount Si places fifth in KingCo 3A
Mount Si’s run for a conference title came to an early
conclusion Thursday night, Oct. 28, when the court `Cats ran afoul of the
Knights. Newport took the two-match victory by identical 15-8 scores. On the
court, Sales recorded 2 kills, 1 ace, 2 blocks and 3 digs; Everett, 1 kill, 2 blocks,
6 assists; and Lewis, 4 kills and 8 digs.
Saturday, the Wildcats downed Issaquah by scores of 15-13,
14-16 and 15-10. The team standouts were Sales, 7 kills, 6 aces, 2 blocks and
4 digs; Harstad, 1 kill, 4 aces and 12 digs; Everett, 1 ace, 3 blocks, 4
digs, 21 assists; Bankson, 5 kills, 3 aces, 7 digs; and Lewis, 10 kills, 4 aces
and 12 digs.
Mount Si then turned and defeated Liberty 15-11 and 15-6, giving
them fifth place in the KingCo 3A championship series. Wildcat stat
leaders were Sales, 3 kills, 1 ace, 1 block and 3 digs; Harstad, 1 ace, 8 digs;
Everett, 2 aces, 3 blocks, 6 digs and 10 assists; Lewis, 6 kills and 7 digs; Durman,
1 kill, 3 blocks; and Bankson, 4 kills, 3 aces and 4 digs.
Mount Si will now take its fifth seed ranking to the Sea-King
district tournament, which starts today and continues Saturday.
Red Wolves advance to districts
The Red Wolves turned it on at the right moment last Thursday,
overcoming a tough Skyline team by scores of 15-6, 6-15 and 15-11 and gaining
a seat in this week’s district championship.
The night had its moments. Katie Power suffered an ankle injury in
the second game, but was able to return for the third match. Heidi
Vandanacker then went down with a bad ankle, but the Wolves recovered and put it away.
Point totals for the game were Power, 7 kills and 13 digs; Wickstrom, 1
kill, 21 assists, 5 digs, 7 aces; Townsend, 11 kills; Henry, 3 kills, 4 digs; and
Lauren Peterson, 10 digs and 3 aces.
“It was an emotional match,” commented coach Christine Hillestad
afterwards. “Skyline had defeated us earlier this year, but in this match
the ladies stepped up and showed what Red Wolf volleyball is all about.
This is the first time Cedarcrest has qualified for the district tournament
since entering the KingCo conference three years ago.”
Last Saturday, the Wolves first squared off with Mercer Island,
dropping two games to the Islanders by scores of 8-15 and 2-15. Mercer
Island later defeated Newport 15-8 and 15-12 to take the KingCo 3A flag.
Power recorded 3 kills and 5 digs; Townsend, 5 kills and 3 blocks;
and Henry 1 kill in the losing effort.
Cedarcrest rebounded in its next game, dumping Interlake 16-14
and 15-4 to take third place in the conference. Again, Power (8 kills, 11
digs), Henry (16 assists) and Townsend (7 kills) led the charge.
With a third-place seed, Cedarcrest will play at Renton, Ballard or
Mercer Island in the Sea-King District Tournament. The first round kicks
off today.
1999 season stats
Cedarcrest completed the regular season with an 8-5 record, good
for second place in the Valley Division behind 11-2 Interlake. Mount Si
finished third at 7-6.
The Wolves’ Erin Townsend finished the year third in kills, with
177 for a 3.69 kill-per-game average. Mount Si’s Heather Lewis placed
fifth with 138 for a 3.00 average, while Cedarcrest’s Katie Power came
in sixth, with 136 for a 2.83 average.
In assists, the Wildcats’ Kristen Everett placed fourth, with 258 for
a 6.45 assist-per-game average. She finished immediately ahead
of Cedarcrest’s Julie Henry, who notched 244 for a 6.26 average.
The Wolves’ Katie Power lead the league in digs, recording 194 for a
4.04 per-game average. Mount Si’s Lewis placed second, with 171 for
3.72, while Power’s teammate Genevieve Weber placed fifth, with 100 for a
2.86 average.
Finally, Stephanie Sales of Mount Si placed fifth in blocks, with 52
for 1.13 blocks-per-game. Erin Townsend of Cedarcrest rounded out the top
ten, notching 39 for a 0.81 average.
