Red Wolves drop two

The Cedarcrest volleyball team started the week with a 5-2 record

and the knowledge that the Washington State Volleyball Coaches

Association had them ranked sixth in the state.

Then came an away-meet with Newport, on Wednesday, Oct. 6. In

a long, hard-fought contest the Knights wrapped the evening with a

five-game victory, by scores of 4-15, 11-15, 15-11, 15-13 and 9-15.

The team totals were Erin Townsend, 18 kills and 4 stuff

blocks; Julie Henry, 33 assists, 4 digs; Katie Power, 13 kills, 28 digs and 1

service ace; Lacy Lawson, 5 kills, 5 digs; Kara Lawson, 4 kills, 1 stuff block;

Rachael Barksdale, 6 digs and 3 service aces; Lauren Peterson, 4 digs, 2 aces, 1

kill and 2 stuff blocks; and Dorothy Westermann, 9 digs, 1 kill and 1

service ace.

Red Wolves’ coach Christine Stefani-Hillstead reported Power

was the league leader in digs and in the top ten in kills-per-game. Townsend

was second in the league in kills-per-game and in the top ten in blocks,

while Henry was second in the league in assists-per-game.

Monday night’s game pitted 5-3 Cedarcrest against 6-2 Valley

Division leader Interlake, while Wednesday’s action saw the Wolves take on

8-0 Mercer Island. In advance, Stefani-Hillstead commented, “They will

both be tough matches, but I think we are mentally and physically prepared.”

Unfortunately, the Saints showed why they were atop the Valley

Division, downing the Wolves in four games, 3-15, 15-9, 10-15 and

11-15. Townsend turned in 18 kills, 2 blocks and 3 digs; Power recorded 12

kills, 21 digs, 3 aces; Henry had 29 assists, 3 kills, 4 digs and 1 ace; and

Heidi Vandanacker logged 3 kills, 2 assists, 1 dig and 1 ace.

Cedarcrest is now 5-4 and looking at the tail end of the 1999

volleyball schedule. The Wolves faced Mercer Island at home on Wednesday,

Oct. 13, and travel to Sammamish next Monday.

Wildcats use Totems as scratching post

Last week the volleyball `Cats got an unexpected break, when their

second game of the week _ against Bellevue _ was changed to

Thursday, Oct. 21. Hence, Monday night’s 2-15, 15-12, 15-9, 15-11 victory over

the Issaquah Indians was a good send-off for this week’s action.

With a 4-3 record in league play, Mount Si took the court on

Monday, Oct. 11, against a surprisingly tough Sammamish team. Going into the

contest, the Wildcat stat-leaders were Genevieve Weber, 19 aces;

Heather Lewis, 61 kills and 71 digs; Kristen Everett, 157 assists; and

Stephanie Sales, 18 blocks.

The `Cats prevailed in four games, 15-12, 15-6, 10-16 and 15-4.

Individual performances saw Sales record 8 kills and 5 aces; Lewis, 16 kills,

4 aces, 8 digs; Betsy Bankson, 5 kills, 2 aces, 7 digs; and Everett, 31 assists.

Mount Si paid a friendly visit to Liberty on Wednesday, Oct. 13.,

and will host Skyline on Monday, Oct. 18.
