A large number of runners turned out for the inaugural Snoqualmie Railroad Days road race last Saturday, Aug. 2, on the streets of Snoqualmie. Despite the cloudy, damp weather, the race drew a strong crowd of fleet-of-foot participants, including runners from states including Florida, Colorado, New Jersey, Texas and Massachusetts.

“I’m overwhelmed,” said organizer Sean Sundwall. “I can’t believe how many people turned out on a yucky day.”

The race was divided into three events: a 10k, 5k, and a 1k children’s run.

Bellevue’s Mike Sayenko clocked a solid time of 30:53 to win the 10-kilometer run.

The 5k winner was Kent’s John Timeus, who ran a time of 15:12.

The top upper Valley finishers were Dave LaTourette of North Bend in the 10k, who ran a time of 38:48 which earned him a 17th place finish in that race, and Alex Kampp of Snoqualmie in the 5k, clocking a time of 19:09 which landed him in 27th position in that event.

Sundwall also organized the brisk 1k children’s run that morning.

He hopes to put the run on again next year.

“Running is a part of every sport, and that’s why we want to make sure we involve kids of all ages and adults, and bring a run to Snoqualmie annually,” he said.
