Mount Si track and field has solid league meet; girls take the league crown

Mount Si‘s track and field teams had a solid two days of competition last week at the Kingco conference meet at Eastlake High School, as both Wildcat teams qualified for districts.

Mount Si’s girls won the league title with a 177-point score buoyed by several event winners. In day one last Wednesday, May 12, in the javelin, the Wildcats had a strong showing, led by the winning throw of 136 feet, three inches by senior Kelly Besmer. Fellow senior Emily Ferree threw 106 feet, three inches to take fourth. The top four in each event qualify for the district meet.

The pole vault also will have a pair of district entrants coming from Mount Si. Senior Georgia Reynolds won the event with a jump of 11 feet, six inches, while junior Lexi Swanson finished third with a leap of eight feet, six inches. Southern Oregon-bound senior Alex Rudd also qualified for next week’s SeaKing meet in the 1,600 meter race with a time of 5:27.94, which earned her second in the event.

Last Friday, May 14, saw great efforts in both the discus and shot put. In the discus, it was a one-two Wildcat sweep, as Corina Linder’s throw of 115 feet, six inches easily took top spot, ahead of second place finisher Molly Meyers. All was not lost for Meyers, however, as she won the shot put title with a throw of 38 feet, 2.25 inches. Hannah Hasbun had a great day in the hurdles, taking second in the 100 meter race and winning the 300 meter. Hasbun also finished second in the 200 meter race and helped Mount Si’s 4×100 relay team win that race; she, Reynolds, Natalie Opsvig and Sophie Rockow all participated in that winning run.

Mount Si’s boys took fourth with a score of 84 points, making the districts in the final team spot. Bellevue took the overall league title.

The Wildcats had a stellar effort in the 100 meter race last Friday which was key. Shelby Williams won that event with a time of 11.31 seconds.

There were a couple of excellent showings in other events last Friday. Mount Si’s 4×100 relay took second with a time of 44.61 seconds. Competing in this event for the Wildcats were Williams, Kaleb Huerta, Shane Blankenburg and Tyler Button. Joe Farmer scored a second place finish in the high jump, with a leap of five feet,eight inches. Jimbo Davis had a great day at the pole vault; the freshman finished fourth in the event with a leap of 10 feet, six inches. Mount Si had a strong showing in the discus, with senior Dylan Woll’s second place finish leading a group of top five finishers for Mount Si which included Doc Derwin in third and Zach Storm in fourth.

In events last Wednesday, both Woll and Kolton Auxier qualified in the boys’ shot put event. Woll threw 48 feet, 2.5 inches to take third, while Auxier, a sophomore, finished fourth with a throw of 47 feet, 9.75 inches. Storm took third in the javelin with a throw of 175 feet, five inches to earn a trip to districts.

The SeaKing meet is this week in Seattle; it is expected that Mount Si’s girls will have a good chance to make districts, while on the boys’ side, Williams, Woll and Storm will lead a boys group which is looking to surprise and make state.
