Eagles have great week

What a week for the Snoqualmie Middle School

seventh-grade girls’ varsity basketball team. It started last

Wednesday with a 25-19 upset victory over Pine Lake.

The first two points were scored on a driving jumper

by Collette Hatch. From there, the Eagles clawed their way to an

11-8 halftime lead. Robyn Pearson and Erin Caldwell made

valuable contributions off the bench.

Pine Lake battled in the third quarter to take a 17-14 lead,

but after a time-out, the Eagles rallied to an 18-17 lead. The play of

the game came in the fourth quarter with the Eagles clinging to a

21-19 lead. Caldwell ripped the ball out of a Pine Lake player’s

grip, turned around and drained the bank shot to seal the deal

with 1:32 left.

Pine Lake tried to come back, but the quick Eagle defense

shut them out in the last minute.

Chelsey Potoshnik led the Eagles in scoring with

seven points, and Caldwell added six. With that win, the Eagles

advanced to 7-2 and took sole possession of second place.

On Thursday, the Eagles finished off their stellar season

with a 32-17 victory over Chief Kanim in the Battle of the

Birds. Potoshnik led the Eagles with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Pearson started the Eagles off by shooting two rainbows into the basket,

giving the team an early lead. With the Eagles up 11-2, the Hawks

rallied to 16-9 at the end of the first half.

In the fourth quarter, the Eagles exploded behind

the shooting of Lindsay Florence, Caldwell and Carmen

Dunford. Kali Walker and Collette Hatch put the clamps on Chief

Kanim’s players and the Eagles cruised to the victory. The Eagles

finished with an 8-2 record, good enough for second place in the

Foothills League.

Eagles post another win

The Snoqualmie Middle School’s seventh-grade

junior-varsity basketball team beat Chief Kanim last week by a score of

19-11.

The team played great defense the whole game, not

allowing Kanim to score.

In the first half, Brianna Westergren had six points in

the low post. Jenny Daley played great defense and shot the

ball well, scoring six points, and Tricia Conway showed hustle the

whole game. The team ended its season at 4-2, noticeably

improving throughout this year’s play.

Eighth grade pulls out win

The Snoqualmie Middle School eighth-grade girls’

basketball team won its game against Chief Kanim last week 26-22.

Heather Waggoner had six points and played solid

defense while Samantha Baldwin, Joan Krona and Meaghan

Dunklee each had good games. The girls ended their season at 6-0.

Seventh-grade JV wins

The Snoqualmie Middle School seventh-grade

junior-varsity girls’ basketball team continued its winning ways last

week with two wins.

The first win was the relay in which the team did well, then

it defeated Chief Kanim 24-12. Tricia Conway and

Allyson Rosman each put on good performances.

Eighth-grade defeats Kanim

The Snoqualmie Middle School’s eighth-grade JV

basketball team won its game against Chief Kanim recently by a

score of 35-14. Sam Baldwin had a fine game along with

Meaghan Dunklee. They finished strong, not letting Chief Kanim get

back in the game.

Jerry Hillburn and Jeremy Elseth coach the JV teams.

Hawks bounce back with win

The Lady Hawks basketball team traveled to the

Sammamish Plateau last week to take on Beaver Lake. Players came home

with a 42-27 win.

The team jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the first quarter

and never looked back. Their dominance continued and after

three quarters, they were ahead 32-20.

Scoring for the Hawks were Brittany Heaps with ten,

Marissa Hill with nine, Emmilee Aaltonen with three, Shannon Posey

with two, Marie Will with four, Lauren McConkey with ten and

Carly Moorhead with two.

McConkey led the team in assists with six. Heap led in

steals with three and Will led in rebounds with ten. Aaltonen led

in jump balls with three, while teammate Marissa Hill led in

blocked shots with one.

“This was a good win for us,” said coach Dick Kirby. “It was

the first time we had all our starters playing in months. We were

still missing some kids that went to the inauguration, but the JV

kids stepped in and played very well to help get the win.”

Eagles soar in Battle of the Birds

In the annual contest between the cross-district rivals of

Chief Kanim and Snoqualmie Middle School, the eighth-grade girls

of SMS demonstrated stingy defense as they cruised to an

impressive 31-6 victory over the Hawks.

With so much emotion in the night’s game, both teams found

it difficult to singe the nets. However, the Eagles used

tenacious defense to inspire the offense and began to pull away.

It was a balanced team effort with Rachel Travis leading

all scorers with 15 points. Amy Trenkamp drove hard to the

hoop for eight, and Whitney Chelgren along with Shannon Kelly

each pumped in four.

In their game for first place against Pine Lake, the

Eagles battled to the buzzer in hopes of retaining last year’s

co-championship. With Whitney Beyerlin dishing out the assists,

Maggie Kujath ripping the boards and Rachel Travis scoring at will

for 24 points, the Eagles gave Pine Lake all they could handle

but came up short 50-42.

Amy Trenkamp and Chelgren each contributed another

eight points. Team awards went to Kelsey Myers for most

improved, Trenkamp for the coaches’ award, Beyerlin for best defensive

player and Travis for most valuable. The team has had a two year

season record of 17-3.
